Need advice

I'm going to send in my m5550 repairs this monday... And I have had this notebook for six months about.
After reading all of the horror stories about repairs and stuff on the official Alienware forums, I'm really really scared of what my notebook will end up or turn into. If you read that stuff, then you would know what I am saying. As a result I'm writing a whole bunch of notes and sticking them on my notebook as I send it in hoping that they would not mess up my system repair.

Now I'm harboring thoughts of returning and canceling the system all together, but there's the 15% restocking fee as well. But, then I could get a better notebook.

But, I don't want to give up on Alienware either...I'm thinking of letting them repair it first to see what happens.

What do you think guys?

Definitely let them repair it. I'm not saying the stories you hear are exaggerated, but people have good experiences as well.

I'm not sure you have the option to return it, since you've had it for 6 months - that is, unless they can't fix it.

So, just relax, and let's assume the best. I've had a chance to visit the Alienware factory ... people there do care about your computer and their work. It's unfortunate that some customers have problems, but remember there are always two sides to a story.

I'm getting artifacts occasionally and blue error screens. Also the video card is very inconsistent, I think it is overheating because of fan/motherboard issues. Every time I run 3dmark06, the score lowers. getting scores in the 1400's with a 256 mb geforce go 7600. I can't even run FEAR consistently on medium settings without spikes and sporadic falls in frames.

You've likely got a vid card that's on it's way out, or a cooling issue. I'd let AW repair it if support over the phone with AW hasn't resolved the issue. If they narrowed it down to the vid card, they'll usually offer to send you a new one to install, or ask you to send the laptop to them for repairs.

Sending it in now would be your best option at this point.

Yup. That is what I am going to do. Let the pros do it. Besides, I'm still under warranty and thinking of upgrading it. I think that my motherboard heat sensors aren't doing their job and kicking on the fan in time, so that's why the video card is overheating.

If both Shazza and Hammer suggest sending it in for repair then you cannot go wrong. Especially since you weren't out to start a flame war against Alienware stating they sent you a lemon of a laptop. They will do right for you. Also if you look into most of the bad posts here with people who complained about how Alienware treated them and honestly every single one of them if they ended up being patient and understanding were more than happy in the end with how Alienware treated them and actually would recommend Alienware to other people even though their initial opinion of Alienware was negative.

Good luck with the repair and hope you're back and running again real soon.

I'm sending it back to AW headquarters in Tennesee today. I'll keep you guys posted in about two or three weeks. (Hopefully, not longer.)
