Need advice - Alienware m9750 vs Dell m1730

Hey all.... long time browser here.... thought I would ask the advice of my fellow geeks.

I am looking for a do it all laptop for work as well as great gaming.

I am looking between the Alienware m9750 which has a freakin gb of video mem vs the Dell m1730 which seems to have a lot of its own great features (although still 512 mb video mem)

I would like this laptop to last me at least 2-3 years without having to replace it. My last several laptops have been Sager's which always seem to die on me one way or another and the major heat/noise had a suck factor as well.

I was talking to that girl on chat who seemed very up front and told me that the alienware looked great, but she went on to say that their dells still have 512 because they take heat, etc very seriously (are dell's quieter... less heat?)

Anyways, I am kinda in a toss up between the two, and some advice from the community would be much appreciated... Hell, maybe there is another system out there that I am missing that may even be better!

Thanks!

You def. have a tough choice ahead of you. What is your budget? I'd spec out both notebooks to your max budget and see what you can get for the money.

Keep in mind Dell offers a complete care warranty to covers against accidents so if you will be moving around w/ the notebook a lot then that is something to look into.

What are people's thoughts on the 1gb video mem vs the 512 by the dell? Is this a big issue?

I think the way I am configuring them, they will come close in price, so either way...

if you game alot its better to have a 1gig of Video right now the 7950GTX are better than two 8700 cards that dell offer you right now. This is why the m9750 doesnt have the 8700 cards in it because of performance.the m9750 has a great cooling system to be able to hold two of these cards the exhaust gets blown out the back of the computer and the keyboard doesnt even get hot compared to other computers that i have seen.. the 7950's are dx9 and the 8700 are dx10...DX10 cards are the future but no one knows when DX10 will the norm and DX9 will no longer be used for gaming..the 8700 cards are the fastest DX10 cards that are in laptops but the 7950 are faster than the 8700. people are awaiting the mention of the arrival of the 8800 cards for laptops..

I have heard that the m1730's have been getting great 3marks though...

i would have to look at the 3dmarks score and what components are different or the same to compare scores. but i know for a fact that the 8700 cards are slower than the 7950 GTX cards, so if the machine have the same specs then the m9750 will out do it because of the video cards...

What kind of performance difference are we speaking of here? Very noticeable? Slightly?

the 3dmark05 for the m9750 with 2.16 and dual 7950 video cards is 12,627 given by one owner...
i couldnt pull up the 1730 3dmark05 results.
the 3dmark06 was 8500 for a 2.16 ghz compared to the 1730 with 2.4ghz
Their scores will be close in the CPU test but the GPU will be a difference

I haven't seen any 1730 reviews yet, If I were trying to decide I would wait and see some reviews of the 1730

someone posted the scores of the 1730 on the main page of notbookforums..

Now what about the fact that the 7950's don't support DX 10?

Is this not an issue with anyone that they will not be able to play those games when they come out?
you can play games that are DX10 on a DX9 card bioshock i think is DX10 but it can be played...

here is a website that shows the difference in the DX9 versus DX10...

To all... I am not very hight up on the whole benchmarks 3dmarks thing... can someone tell me if there is a human noticeable difference between gameplay with the 7950gtx and the 8700 gt?

I would say w/ a wuxga screen and with newer games yes......

It all really depends on the setting and FPS you can tolerate....some people must have high settings and FPS in the 70's.......others are ok on medium and FPS in the 40's
