Motherboard replacement memory issue in Inspiron 1505

Thread Starter
I am replacing a motherboard (with a refurb from Dell) in my Dell Inspiron 1505 and am getting an error once everything is put back together. When I start the machine, after the Dell splash screen I get:

The amount of system memory has changed.
If you did not change the memory......
To resolve this issue, try reseating the memory.

Now, I have gotten this error with two separate refurb motherboards (both from Dell, after dealing with their HORRIBLE tech and customer support), and I'm wondering if there's something I'm doing wrong. The damaged motherboard works just fine (short of the two side USB ports that are damaged), so I know that the memory is seated properly. I have tried starting it with one RAM chip and with both chips (they're DDR2 1 GB sticks).

Help please! Thanks.

Have you tried selecting the BIOS settings to load default settings? Just a shot in the dark.

Hopefully just some good humor here. The comedy being that your amount of memory is different than what it was last run-up & tested with at Dell, so it warns you. If you F1 past it and shutdown normally it shouldn't pop up again. but if you immediately start diagnosing by changing memory size again it will continue to display that message at startup. If it's happening over & over regardless, then you could try flashing the latest BIOS and running the Diag32 memory test (or the original memtest) and it should tell you which DIMM is giving the problem. http://www.memtest.org/

Yeah, EVERY refurbished motherboard will give you that error message on 1st boot. Just wait it out until it says press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup utility. Can take a little while for it to pop up. If it won't go away, you may have a defective memory module and Pally's suggestion to run the mem-test is what I would do.
