NEED HELP, MotherBoard, Power Supply

Well looks as though i'm selling my comp, getting another quad core machine but this time with a 8800ultra.

What Motherboard and power supply do I want to get?

I have a p5n-e and its a POS and will never buy ASUS again.

I want to spend 150 or less on mobo, and 100 or less on power supply.

Thanks in advance!

Although I'm a big Asus fan I've also had good luck with Gigabyte and ABIT and bad luck with MSI and ECS.

Gigabyte- GA-P35-DS3R P35 Chipset
Abit- IP35-E P35 Chipset

Neither has Nvidia SLI capabilities but based on your price I'm thinking that's not high on your hit parade.

If it's Nvidia you're looking for then you might wait for the next chipset rev.

For power supplies I suggest either of SeaSonic's 500W power supplies, the M12 SS-500HM or S12 II SS-500GB.

Those are my suggestions but your mileage may vary.

I would advise raising your allocation for a PSU. A bad PSU = system that could go down hill.

I had a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750w power supply quit on me. I got an expensive Ultra X-Pro 800W. I hope to get better luck with it.

SeaSonic makes quality power supplies.

Yeah seasonic is a good brand to look at. For you config I would personally look for a system of maybe 600w+ PSU of pretty good brand

Why is the P5N-E a POS again?

Because I have the same board, same CPU and was having issues until I flashed the motherboard for Quad Core support.

Now everything is great.

Hey Larry, ltns. Been doing ok?

Generally PC Power and Cooling is GREAT. They really do know how to make good power supplies, but like anything there are failures.

do you guys understand the word warranty? PC Power & Cooling Steps Up Warranty Program on All Power Supplies PC Power & Cooling Steps Up Warranty Program on All Power Supplies Sunnyvale, California, USA, September 18th, 2007 PC Power & Cooling, with a long-standing reputation as one of the leading high-performance computer power supply companies in the world, has established a new and improved warranty program for its two flagship models. The warranty for the award-winning Silencer Series, formerly sold with a 3-year commitment, will be stepped up to 5-years, while the warranty length for the maximum-performance Turbo-Cool Series will be extended from it's current 5-year commitment to a full 7-year warranty. "As customers will often report that PC Power & Cooling PSUs continue to power their machines after more than a decade, we have decided to extend our warranties for both the Silencer and Turbo-Cool lines by 2-years, as an expression of our continued confidence in PC Power products and ongoing commitment to our customers", said PCP&C founder Doug Dodson. The new strengthened warranty program is further testament to PC Power's commitment to its customers and reminds end-users that the company stands firmly behind the investment-grade quality of their products. Since 1985, PC Power & Cooling has focused on sustained performance to specifications for all products and unparalleled in-depth technical support. PC Power and Cooling is government spec'ed and is benchmarked at higher temps (hotter temps) than any other company including OCZ and to Rockin, nothing Asus makes sucks, maybe the dude you bought it from tinkered with it too much or you did the same......everyone makes dud's yes.....but across the "board" (no not motherboard) Asus has been top dog.....thicker pcb, better cooling, sturdy construction but dont take my word for it, conclude on your own experince soulsaver

Soulsaver, thanks for taking the time for that. I needed my computer to work. I did not even think about the warranty thing. I just trashed it. I wanted to get it back up and running as soon as possible.

I've had great luck with Tyan for MB and Enhance for PS.

I would recommend you make a modification. Grab an 8800GTX, which will cut your cost a bit & reallocate money to the PSU. I would suggest you set aside $150 for the PSU.

PSU is the cornerstone of your build. if you skimp on that expect to pay for it later. I would suggest at least a 650 watt supply. I run a 700 on the system in my sig link.

here is a little toy to play within calculating usage. the lite version is free, the pro is $1.99

It will show you what you need to run your system w/ a little breathing room.

The 8800GTX can be OC'ed fairly well, and should be able to pull at least stock Ultra numbers.

Totally agree with Sol here. The PSU really is something you don't want to skimp on since it's what is regulating every other component in that system...bad PSU can kill everything so I would think paying $50 insurance on your $1000+ system is a great plan.

Well I bought my system, I ended up with this 900 Watt power supply, good reviews soo figured what the heck and free 250 gig sata drive.

And I ended up with this motherboard after talking to a friend...I was going to go with a MSI Platnium board but he said no way nothing compared to this....

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4

Also I tried that PSU Calculator....Interesting with a Quad Core, 2 gigs ram, and Dual 8800Ultras it reccomends a 461 watt power supply, bit low if you ask me?

lol you need to press calculate at the bottom of the page. I ran a quick calculation and pulled 651, did not add audio card, fans...blah blah. .

FYI if you were considering SLi that motherboard will not work for you with nVidia cards.

I did do calculate...I dont like your calculator LOLOLOL

I guess had I stuck with a 500 watt power supply this would be a question but since i'm gonna be at 900 no point in calculating.

Also instead of Asus went with the Gigibyte board, anddd much better power supply so thanks for the advice!

never heard of ABS but it got good reviews sooo we'll give her a try!
