Can't get Satellite, alternatives? (Switch box???)

So my parents own a lake house in a particularly woody area. They have tried multiple times to get satellite, each time with the same results. Too many trees interfering with the signal, and there is not a good enough read to install a satellite.

Are there any alternatives for them? I have heard of something called a Switch box that you can install at the location (lakehouse) and install the other half at a place that does have good reception (home) and you can get the TV over the internet or something... is this true? does this work?

*edit* actually it just occured to me that the lakehouse has no internet connections...... so basically i am back to square one....

yeh i just read your edit and i think you were refering to a slingbox

http://www.slingbox.com/

it uses an internet connection i believe so i think you're pretty much F@@ked... no internet + no Satellite = no tv

Can you get cell reception at the lakehouse? if so you might be able to get something like this. Depending on your reception you might be able to get some bandwidth from it and attach a slinkbox to it.

Did the satellite installer try to mount a dish tripod on the roof? Something like this:

If the roof is level with or higher than the tree line, this might work.

unfortunatly the trees are way higher than the roof... I will have to check next time I go back for cell reception, that other option might work...

Just a long shot, how about Wimax or EVDO in your area?

In a large portion of the US if you get phone signal you can also get wireless internet.

I don't suppose there's any creative tree-trimming that can be done? If it were me, I'd just start knocking down trees until I had a hole in the canopy my Satellite dish could see through. I'm pretty sure there's also ways to mount a satellite dish in a tree so long as it's got LOS to the sky.

Makes me feel fortunate to live where I do, trees aren't natural here (it's all grassland) so Satellite is quite common out in rural areas.

What I linked to is an EVDO capable router...

at the risk of sounding old school... but isn't a vacation house to escape the junk you don't wanna deal this at your regular house? such as a tv? I mean, worst comes to worst bring some DVDs or load up your laptop w/ some movies @ home and what what you brought while you are there. You can just listen to the radio for the news

Some people live in lake houses year-round.

Judging by the OPs first post, I'd say they are pretty interested in having it out there.

you can go here and query the experts & see if they have a potential solution for you.

Add this to see where you need the LOS. The most common satellites w/ dish are: 110/119/129/ 61.5 you can do without)
