Alternative to outlook(eeew bloatware)

I am geting sick and tired of outlook responsivnes, and also the fact that it one of he biggest security holes in the system.
Is there a decent alternative to it. The functions i seek the most is:

Multiple accounts.
Rules for incoming message sortment
HTML view
Address book
And if it got calendar it wouldn´t hurt @ all (but not that important)
Use of Digital Certificates

I like pretty much the userinterface of outlook, and the alternatives i have tried has failed big time on this.
The best i tried so far is Thunderbird, but it´s still beta and toasted all my messages once, so i will not use this before it´s released.

Oh, and freeware is not a demand, although not the price of outlook

The once i have tried is:
Eudora, The Bat & Thunderbird

Hope there is one out there

I shifted over to pegasus. Its alot less of a hog than outlook, but a bit clunky in spots. Good filtering though.

Best of luck

Eudora has worked without problems for me.

aliensub, have you disabled Messenger?
This could be the reason Outlook is a bit sluggish.
I run MS Outlook and it is as quick as any other mail system, however, if you have disabled Messenger you must apply a couple of registry tweaks to fix a problem where Outlook will still go looking for its stupid sidekick.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
PreventRun=1 Will prevent MSN Messenger from running
PreventAutoRun=1 Will prevent MSN from popping up automatically.
Set/create both these DWORD entries to 1 to disable MSN Messenger.

Fix Outlook Express slowdown when MSN Messenger is disabled

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID]
Find the key {FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541} and under it
select the folder IniProcServer32.
In the right panel of regedit double-click on the (Default) entry
at the top and completely delete the value data it contains.
Now do the same for the LocalServer32 folder as well.

Messenger is disabled to intergrate with outlook, but it´s not the problem. IT´s not so much the startup time that bothers me. I start outlook when i boot my computer and shuts it down when i leave.
IT´s more the overall experience with it. Shifting between the different parts (mail, calendar todo etc.) is really sluggish and it does some annoying screen redraw hickups in the progress. Also sometimes moving between messages the preview pane goes all belly up. But thanx for the suggestion.

I have tried both the Pegasus and Eudora clients. I quickly moved away from. For some reason they didn´t appeal to me (can´t say why in detail), and there where some issues with them I can´t remember it this point.

I spend allday yesterday trying out new clients (can´t even remember half of their names) and nothing hits me. Maybe I have used Outlook too much so i have been M$ biased. Just think I´m gonna stick with the slopiness, but thanx for the suggestions.

Maybe my only hope is that Ximian @ some point ports Evolution to Windows .

Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express. I found Outlook to be alot more sluggish compared to Outlook Express. Account management, initialization, switching between thing, etc all seems alot more fluid in OE. Outlook always seems to be hitting the big clunky MS Office DLLs. Also (maybe this is just a personal perception) disabling the preview pane and hence having to double-click to open improves performance and enhances security (Assuming common sense prevails in not opening emails proclaiming to enlarge ones member, promise infinite fortune, or offer better drugs than the boys down the street with shoes over the phone lines)

It´s outlook. I have also thinking of going the OE way, but in my search yesterday I also found out that I really rely on the "one app all purpouse" way of things. It´s really nice to just have to open one program and do all my emails, scheduling, palm sync and other stuff instead of have 2-3 different apps running.

It´s also funny to see that there is really no competitor to outlook in a whole (lots of singleapps alternatives), maybe people don´t wanna waste the time trying to compete with billy boy.....

Oh and on the security it´s not really the big problem for me. So far I haven´t had a virus comming into my system (knock on wood). I am protected behind my custom linux firewall, Norton antivirus, and my isp has all kind of filters on the incoming mailserver, and outlook is configured @ pretty high security

You might want to try the free abandonware version of calypso. It doesn't have a calendar, but it does have great support for multiple email accounts and sorting.

Thunderbird is just a re-implement of the email portion of Mozilla (which is stable, I'm typing this from 1.6 now ).

I have no personal experience with it though, as at home I use my original ISP account in webmail format, and at work I use Pine (which could be another possible alternative, there is PC-Pine version available).

i second thuderbird, it's great.. and you can get more outlook like features with some addon extensions.

I think it becomes a trade off, I too am hooked on Outlook because it does everything instead of having 2-3 programs running, the tradeoff is that it is somewhat sluggish at times because it is not streamlined to do one task extremely well.

I saw some thunderbird extensions that did the calendar and palm sync. Hmm... you can always try it, see what you think. I bailed from pegasus- (note post above) to thunderbird and couldnt be happier. Pegasus is originally a novell product I believe, and is written like it, for sure. Clunky and wierd. Thunderbird is very smooth.

I think Thunderbird is indeed good forthcoming mail client. With the extensive plugin based interface it could have all of the possibilities (or closesly) as Outlook, but many things of it is still to early beta (especially the calendar) for me to trust it in a production enviroment.
I think I will stick to Outlook until Thunderbird has come a little further (should reach 1.0 this summer), then I will jumb the boat.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback

I'm giving this a try... I like it so far...

I typically use Outlook, since I have Exchange Server running on my server, but for personal use, I use Thunderbird.

I cannot imagine anything replacing Outlook anytime soon (Simian's Evolution doesn't even come close, let's be real here). I, like millions of others, am waiting for the day that the "outlook-killer" arrives, but it hasn't happened.

I have actually found an idea that i feel appealing although it´s for Linux.
For KDE there is an app called kontact that binds several apps together to have the possibilities of outlook (these include Kmail, KOrganizer, Kadress book, knotes, ktask etc.). Kontact binds them together in a single interface and it functions pretty good.
Hope someone take this idea to the win platform.

More info here: http://www.kontact.org/

I have been using Eudora for many years and I am completely satisfied with it. It does handle multiple accounts.
