NEED HELP!!!Underperforming 7950GTX!!!

Thread Starter
Just got a 7950GTX as a replacement for my 7900GS and after searching for the right drivers, finally manged to install it. To my dismay, it is performing less than a stock 7900GS!!! On my 7900GS I used to get 6300 and with 7950GTX I am getting 6200 WTF!! I paid some cash for it so I am pissed .

Any idea what the hell is wrong with it? Currently using forceware 94.22. I am hoping its not a hardware problem. Can anyone suggest a stable and good performing driver for the 7950GTX??

your getting 6200? in 3dmark 2006?

thats a great score.

I only get 5566 in 06 overclocked and 9990 in 05 overclocked

Does it mean the card is dodgy?? I really need some advise on this!! Thanks in advance!!

yes, a 7950GTX stock should preform somewhere at the 8500-9000 range and 5200 range on 06.

Try the Dell Drivers, and check your GPU Temps
post #7 of 19
GPU Temps, CPU temps. 97.92 is a stable driver from GeforceTony.

did you use driver cleaner to remove the old driver?
I know this may be a silly question, but are you sure it is a 7950GTX? It seems odd that the card is performing within 100 points of a GS.

run Nbitor & give us the info on your clock speeds, etc.

sure you didnt buy another gsx? lol they'd report the same thing technically :P except the memory =)

I guess the culprit was the appaling driver from Dell. I managed to force install forceware 84.63 and guess what, 3DMark 05 got me 9200 pts and 06 got me 5200pts. Guess that is the expected performance. One thing is that since I am using somewhat poorly patched driver,I cant overclock. (I have flashed the bios). I'll try that driver to see if there is any performance improvement. Thanks a bunch guys!!

Can't overclock at all or can't overclock through coolbits in the control panel? And also, where did you get the drivers from?

I wouldn't worry about overclocking anyways.. you won't need to because of the extra pipes and speed.. overclocking your memory 100mhz will only gain you 2-3 fps in games. Better off to stick with stock clocks, keep the temp down, and have your card last longer.

As the previous poster stated memory OC provides less of a performance boost, but the core can kick up your performance quite nicely. Usually over 730 memory you will not notice any difference in performance. The more you OC the core, though the more performance you can achieve. With my OC 659/837 I get a pretty good bump in games.

As far as the longevity of the card... If the system is cooled properly & temps remain within their operational limits the "life" of the card is not going to be adversely affected. My temps never exceed 80c & I have yet to have 1 issue running at my speeds.

Finally broke 10K barrier in 05. Did that at 625/725 so I am very impressed.

To SolApathy, how is it that your temps dont go beyond 80C at those speeds? Mine touches 83C already.

I did try to apply AS5 to the gpu but for some reason, the heatsink doesnt seem to come off even after removing the for philips screws!! I am not too happy to pry it open!! Anyone got any ideas??

I've had one gpu where it was on pretty tight. I just pried it off with my hands though. I'm not exactly a patient personality however.

I've got clocks similar to Sol and my temps are around 80 as well. I think +/- 3 is reasonable difference considering our different ambients.

I'm not sure if Sol uses fans but I use the Pacific Breeze with no AS5 so far. I ran out of AS quite awhile ago and I'm hesitant to get any because the temperatures are already pretty low.

you pry it open The GPU & RAM is attached with thermal tape, which is quite sticky.

AS5 will make all the difference in temps. Keep in mind you need to leave the RAM thermal tape alone because there is a gap between the RAM & the HS.

And nope I don't use an external fan at all. My ambient temps range from 72-77.

Say Sol Apathy, i'm about to get a 7950 as well, but am wondering.. did you notice what the temps were at stock?

TBH it's been awhile I don't remember, but I know before I had the as5 applied they were inching towards 90c
