thinking bout going Apple

Hi everyone, I'm going off to college next year, and I was thinking bout getting an Apple Macbook Pro. First of all, because I had a dell Inspiron 9300 for like 3 years and it was a PIECE OF SHIT. I mean it was GREAT for gaming, BUT ONLY WHEN IT WORKED. and then the sound card fell apart, the keyboard keys started falling off, short in the motherboard and now the slot for the charger is messed up for some reason and it doesnt charge.

So I wanted something new different, powerful, yet nice looking, elegant, yet functional. and would work with gaming.

My question is: Just how good is the macbook pro in gaming? because I dont know why but the graphics chip seems sort of weak to me. Also how easy is the software to use for a new comer? I mean I've been using windows all my life and I only used Mac in elementary when we played Oregon trail.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have a macbook pro that I dual boot for game development/level design. Works good for me.

I use bootcamp to boot into Windows for a few programs as well as WarHammer 40K: Dawn of War and Winter Assault. Not a new new game I know but my old Inspiron 6000D could hardly handle the game and my MBP plays it beautifully.

If you're going to use this system primarily for gaming then don't buy a mac.

i have a macbook and absolutely love it. i don't game on it, but besides the gpu i'm sure it could handle most games. I run parallels so i can use xp and os x at the same time without rebooting. i've used bootcamp, and vmfusion, but parallels works best for me.

good luck on the decision

If I am hearing you right, you are a guy who wants a capable computer and likes to game from time to time.

If this is true, I would suggest the MBP actually. Why? It is more than well-rounded and capable, and college demands will slowly but surely rob your game time. You will soon appreciate the productivity-oriented nature of the Mac platform, as well as its versatility to boot into Windows (in case you become an engineer).

Additionally, the MBP is right at the limit of the size/weight most people are willing to carry around.

Provided you don't get your MBP stolen (please please please insure it, as this happens all the time in college), it should last you well over 3 years. The processor and GPU might be yesterday's news by then, but the screen will still look great, and it will run like a champ.

Gary's got it. One of the advantages of OS X is that the hardware stays effective, even as the OS improves. I know that Leopard runs just as well, if not better on my MacBook (cuz I am dualbooting), so there is no reason to think that so long as my MacBook is within the recommended specs for the OS, it will run like a champ.

Shoot, I have seen stories where a person was running Tiger on an old PowerBook G3 Lombard (technically unsupported) and it ran great (needed to bump the base RAM obviously, and I think hard drive since they shipped with 6GB drives) but other than that, was smooth.

And seriously, in my opinion, the MacBook and MacBook Pros are some of, if not the, most capable and versatile machines out right now.
