**E1705/M1710 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS** Go here first - Page 3

Alot of people reported seeing throttling at around 94 C. Since the bios limit is 102 C, I'd say that it follows that (most) M1710's need an +8 C offset.

Also, you do not need a third program as the driver (w/ coolbits registry temperature settings) shows the temperature of the card.

I have a few questions.

I have a 1705 ~ one of the original Yonah core launch versions of 2006. Would these upgrades be possible for my computer, eg video card (right now it is a 7800gs) and cpu (T2500 Core Duo)?

Yeah. You would get some significant gains from a 7900GTX or 7950GTX video card. On the CPU side, a T7200 is the best bang for the buck. Look at the first page of this thread for more detail.

So I can upgrade without a hitch?

I'd be lying to you if I said there was no "hitch". Both of the cards I mentioned have dual heat pipes, so you would have to remove a very small section of the inside of your laptop for the 2nd pipe to fit. All it takes is a pair of pliers and the piece breaks right off. It harms your laptop in no way, cosmetically or functionally. The CPU will drop right in with absolutely no other modifications. Remember though, the E1705/M1710 can only use the even-numbered CPU's. For example; T7200, T7400, T7600. And remember to order some AS5 thermal paste for the install. Should run about $7.

Unless you find a T7xxx class cpu for VERY cheap, you won't gain a lot from a CPU upgrade over your T2xx series.. Benchies show that they're about 10-15% faster. If you're into gaming, like TT said a 7900/7950GTX (or the FX 2500M / 3500M) is definitely a worthy investment.

Is there a FAQ on installing laptop CPUs? I've only messed with desktop CPU installs. I don't undersatnd the thermal pasting issue; why is it necessary? A fan won't cut it? The 7950GTX/FX3500 just slips in?

CPU's and memory cards generate a lot of heat. In fact, if you were to place your thumb on your CPU core and then turn on your laptop, it would almost immediately burn the hell out of you. The thermal paste just helps to fill the small imperfections in the core and the heat sink so that the maximum amount of heat is transfered. There is a fan involved. It moves air across the heat sink that is connected to your CPU or GPU. There is a FAQ with pictures on the Dell website. Yes, both of those cards will fit in your laptop, but you've got to break that small piece of the case I told you about earlier.

Could i ask this thread http://www.notebookforums.com/thread211682.html be added to the info while strictly speaking not pure raid its a performance option for these machines. Pro's : can quicken game load times. Cons: cant use CD though network CD/DVD drives should be common overwireless in most homes these days.

That's cool. Did you ask Diefool though?

Hey TT, if you wouldn't mind, can you get with me so we can further improve this thread? I've got some ideas I'd like to run across you, and rather than just editing the post (which I could do if I was an ass) I'd like to get with you and improve this thread. Catch me on IM if you'd like.

Thank you! I like information such as these.

Hi TT, perhaps you should mention that unlocking 79xx GPUs allows software overclocking with drivers 169.04 and below. 169.09 and newer don't require unlocking the GPU bios for software o/c.

Hey, Savat, how are things? I'll definitely edit the post as soon as I can. Thanks for the info.

Ya know, I totally forgot about the edits I was gonna do to the post. Being busy sucks.

Is the 7950 GTX worth getting if I have a 7900 go GS? Is it a lot better? I tried looking for the FX3500 and all I saw were 256MB cards. I've only seen the 7950 GTX with 512MB.

What about the processor? Is the Dual Core 2 that much better than the Dual Core (or Core Duo)? Is it worth getting?

And if so to both, which would be the best one to get at the moment according to my comp specs in my sig?

If you ask about a GPU upgrade, I assume you're a gamer. So yes the 7950GTX is worth it. It's got the headroom for running at higher resolutions (1440x900 in your case). A CPU upgrade won't yield this much of performance gain over your 2400. I compared Crysis benchmarks with a user running a system mostly the same as mine, except he had a T2400 as compared to my T7400, and we only had a couple FPS difference. However, I would consider getting a 7200rpm HD. This makes a huge difference. In order : 1. GPU 2. HDD 3. CPU
