I figure, 2 programs doing the same task (measure the GPU temps) could possibly cause problems, so well see how it goes. Do you put the tiny drop on the Core itself or in the middle of the heatsink??? Thanks for all the replies, you guys rock a whole lot, keep the suggestions coming........
Hey Ghaz, Just a hint : whenever I alt-tab out of Crysis and come back the game runs at slow FPS. I have to close my game and restart it. I had a similar issue with Bioshock but found out alt-tabbing a couple times brings the game back to normal FPS. About Ikfangui, it interferes with two of my soundcards (I have 3 soundcards on my lappy). But it does NOT interfere with the onboard audio.

What would be nice is a program that shows temps in an overlay in-game like FRAPS does. Hopefully they'll add that to FanGUI someday.

Ghaz...I also use the single blob method. This way the tightening of the heatsink spreads the AS5 where it is needed most. Too much AS5 can actually act as a thermal barrier. Of course there are varying schools of thought on how to apply the stuff. If you are unsure if you used the right amount, use a trial run. If you remove the sink and the blob didn't spread over the whole core, you know you need a slightly bigger blob.

Your 130 watt supply should be fine, but that brings up a good question. How hot is the PSU getting? Your throttling could be due to the PSU tripping and you dropping to battery power. I did that all of the time with my 90 watt.

Oh yeah, Alt-tab-ing out of Bioshock and Crysis definitely screwed stuff up for me on many occasions.

Hey guys thanks again for the help. Knowing I have you guys helps me sleep better at night

Actually, when I alt tab everything runs fine, the FPS will kick up back up and it will play as normal. I think I may have used a bit too much AS5 and I agree TT I was laying in bed and I was like "Crap I bet the AS5 is hampering the car'

I cant really think of any software that may interfere with it, so Im going to pinpoint the problem to the AS5

If you look at this image, do you think thats a good amount, but then I would spread it with something like a credit card????? Does that work?

holy shite !!!

that's way way too much bud.

i put like a little blob the size of a top of a PIN. you know the ones with the round plastic head.

I put a li'l tiny squirt like that little the size of a paper cut out from a hole punch.

right in the center of the die.

then put the heatsync over and screw tight in order of screw a,b,c,d 1,2,3,4 etc.

there just has to be a thin layer to fill in the parts that need it.

the reason for putting a blob and then screwing the heatsync down is so the AS5 in turn goes where it needs to go.

Thanks for the reply again

Thats not my card lol I found that pic online.

What does it mean if it freezes like 10 seconds into game? 10 seconds doesnt get the card warm at all. Im at a loss for what the problem is, but I will still reapply the AS5 this weekend, but I never had it freeze that quick.

Crysis loaded, then 10 sec later it forze, with the sound crackeling......Any ideas?

I'll tell you this.

My card was running fine, *my fx2500

then I decided to AS5 it for fun.

It ran fer shit when I did that and it took about 8 times to get it right.

Now I do the 1 dot in the middle then screw and it works fine.

650/750 24/7 no overheats no freezes and plays every game I throw at it like a Demon In hell!

I can take mine apart and do as5 and put back together in under 20min flat now.

the first time I was sooo careful and took a couple hours to do it.

now I could do it blindfolded. *seriously*

so wait youre saying the card ran fine then after applying as5 you experienced problems, but after re applying the as5 properly it went back 2 normal?
yup, that's correct.

if you wanna OC, just dump the card with nibitor change the hex bite in the Perf 2 table and then you can oc with ati-tools.

or just change the oc in the bios then flash back

What problems did you experience?

Ok so after several hours of troubleshooting Ive come up with this.

The game will lock up and freeze for a little bit, then it seems to unfreeze but the FPS will come to a crawl say 2-3FPS. I have to exit out and cancel the game from task manager. It likes to lock up about 10 seconds after the game has loaded so I dont believe the card is getting hot. Im running driver 169.04 ATM.

Its killing my hopes that the card will work. Is there anyway program to test to see if the videocard is a dud?

Anymore advice would be much appreciated (Im planning on re-applying AS5 this weeekend as some have suggested already)

did the card play games before as5?

run 3dmark
When I did the mod I put AS5 on it when I installed it. So basically ive always had AS5 on the GTX. My 7900GS never game me any problems, and If i remember correctly, it had little to no thermal paste

3dmark-4850
but ya know what now that i think about it, i dont think i had any issues with it at home. its just been going nuts at school.

Hmm I will add more benchmarks here with my 8700m GT SLI setup clocked to 700/1550/900

So far I´m running Colin McRae Dirt all Medium Settings at 1680x1050 with 30+ fps

Oblivion runs all maxed at 1920x1200 and running outside on horseback 30-40 fps and this with HDR, Qarls Texture Pack 2, Natural Mod and other Mods. It is the outside that counts since it is the most demanding area of gameplay, but 30-40 fps at this res is pretty good IMO.

STALKER runs at 40-50+ fps at 1920x1200 with Dynamic Lighting, With sliders lowered to the middle.

Test Drive Unlimited runs at 1680x1050 Medium Draw Distance and with HDR with 30-40 fps.

Note all this under Vista, I will install XP later on.

I'll add some 8800GTX SLI benchmarks on here as well one I get them. they should be delivered 2/5/08, atleast that is what the dell site says.
