Intel 2200BG driver spins up hdd all the time

Hi,
as I again need a working xp installation on my dell inspiron 6000 I tried to turn off the annoying hdd noise when it is not needed, but the hdd constantly spun up after being off for a maximum of 5 seconds so I installed a brand new xp, put all MS updates on it and started installing software to find out what is causing this hdd activity

and voila, it's the intel Pro Wireless 2200BG driver - isn't that funny, a driver for a card that is needed to get the "powersaving"-centrino-sticker actively disables hdd powersaving on a laptop - even when it just idles - great work, intel.

Can anyone name me a xp driverversion for that card that does not have this "nice" effect? I am using the lastest driver from dell atm (which is intel version 11.1.0.0).

noted that u r dual booting with ubuntu, which by coincidence, has offered many articles about "spinning down hard drive in dell machine. Have u tried the same thing with xp, by using NHC or RMClock?

As the harddisk is spinning down (and not waking up seconds later) flawlessly on linux and on xp without intels wlan tool (I found out that it's not the driver itself but the wlan tool from intel) the problem surely is intels wlan tool.

And with my harddrive (a 160gb western digital one, btw the third in 2 years as both hdds I got from dell went defect) no tool is able to control the idletime for spindown, either you set the power management of the harddrive to 128 and it spins down at it's own timing or it will never allow spin down.

can u leave the wlan handling to windows zero configuration service? this would eliminate the need for intel wlan utilities w/o effect to the driver itself

Actually I am using windows build in crappy wlan configuration tool.

But nevertheless it's a shame that this intel software is as shitty as it is in regard to powersaving.
