How much RAM will Windows XP support on the 9261?
What about WinXP 64Bit?
Or should I just use Windows server 2003. This is definitley NOT a gaming machine.

XP 32bit will address just around 3 GB but XP 64bit will currently address up to 128 GB. In future I expect bigger (2x4GB or 2x8GB) memory chips to arriv, so I think it is worthwhile to run Vista Ultimate 64bit or XP64bit. I would consider the latter only in dual boot mode in case of compatibility issues (which I don't have, knock on wood!).

I had been reading about the XP 4GB limit and how it really only uses 3GB.
You're running XP X64 now with no compatibility issues?
No, I am waiting for my Sager. XP is history for me. I have been running Vista 32bit for almost a year now. It gets better al the time. I did some research and have found no serious reports of compatibility issues for Vista 64bit (Ultimate off course).

I hope to get the machine early next week...

I'm getting 4GB of RAM so I need a 64-bit OS and really would rather not go with Vista. I'm a little bit "new OS shy".

64 bit XP was a bomb. Go with Vista and you will be happier.

32 bit os only address up to 3.25, and there was whole myth thing about how that missing 700MB+ ram missing is use for system I/O, pci, video card. but think it just BS since this explain a little different http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...AE/PAEmem.mspx Also sometime hardware can limit to 3.25 GB as well, base on this article explain http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblo...05/is3gbenough I think you will have more compatibility issue with XP x64 then Vista 64, everyone seem to go forward and support Vista rather then XP

Agree, but I think Vista 64 bit is the way to go if you must use 64 bit, there will be more support in the future where XP will start fade out sometime the end of next year

Agree, I try 64 bit XP, but there were not as much support as Vista 64-bit, so I end up using Vista 64 bit

What about Server 2003? I really have no use for gaming or the flashy interface of Vista on this machine.

I heard they were good too, but with 64 bit you may have some compatible issue. There was an post somewhere on one of the forums on the Internet said it play game better then XP. I can't confirm or deny it. but I can tell you I heard a few good thing about it

I think I'll use Server 2003 64Bit first.

Did you get it working on 2k3 or Xp?

I haven't got the machine yet. Sometimes the wheels turn slowly when asking for a $3500 laptop

Oh well, I'll let you know how xp64 goes.
Mine should ship in a few days.

Got mine 12 days ago. Sorry for not reporting earlier.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit and it is a smooth ride so far. There seems to be a driver issue in case you have 4GB and two 8700's. I am sure they will repair this but it may take some time yet. So check that.

How did the other hardware work with 64 bit drivers? Any hangups or problems? I am thinking for going to vista ult 64bit. I would like to know my 9860, 2.16ghz Core 2, 7950gtx will run it ok before I drop the cash.

I been using Vista 64 for about 2 months and so far it only freeze up twice during the game, and I think it is due to the fact Dreamscreen was running, when I disable Dreamscreen it was fine during the game. this was on Dell Precision Workstation 690 with 8 core (2x E5320 Xeon), 12GB RAM, raid 0 on 4x SAS 10k RPM drive. I also so test a few different Nvidia graphic card from low end to high end mix of Quadro professional graphic card to consumer game card as well as ATI 2900 Pro. they all seem to work. As for application I don't have a single problems with 32 bit application or 64 bit I can think of. so far I am pretty happy with my Vista. If you run Vista make sure look at this link here and apply the patch for your system http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2177716,00.asp

So much for a few days... Order was delayed 3 weeks waiting for the Wsxga screen. Tried Xp first. Xp64 says it has to be installed by booting from the dvd. When I did, Xp64 wasn't offered as an option. Xp pro only saw 3.2 Gig ram. Then tried 2003. 64bit was offered and loaded ok but the Raid driver was 32 bit. Installed 2003 Standard from scratch, it wouldn't upgrade the xp install. Most everything worked fine. Camera doesn't work and the Nero InCd is flaky. I suspect Nero might have been flaky on xp too. 2003 32 bit works great. Have to disable the annoying server security stuff. It sees 4Gig. Twice as fast as my top end 9750/xp, 2.5 times faster than 9750 on Vista. Lots of desktop software won't install on 2003. I'll miss Norton SpeedDisk but I'll live. Everything I'm currently using is ok May switch to Vista64 someday if there's enough stuff I need that won't run. The camera driver thought I was trying to install on Win2k... Stupid... I'm liking it.
