Just got my M9750, Upgrade advice

ok so i recently ordered a m9750 , when the price dropped to 1800. i dont have much money, super broke college student here, i thought if i were to trade in a few older laptops, i would get a good portion of that 1800,( its the standard m9750, 80gig hDD, 1gb ram, single 512mb nvidia, no clearview, nothing fancy), with tax and shipping it totaled 2066.90 ) so i sold a dell lattitude, got $114, while everyone else on ebay is getting about 300 and up, my AWm5500 got me 850 thats with 2, yes 2 graphic cards, 128 and spare 256 geforce 6600, and my sentia for parts for me 200, after ebay fees and all i had about 1000, anyway getting back to it, haha sorry guys..so i thought id order everything with standard configurations, and i'll upgrade myself since aw over charges,

which memory do you guys recommend, im looking to boost the ram to at least 2gb, though 4 would be great ( cheapest i found yet was 260$, what do you guys think? , alien ware wanted 500 for that) is Kingston any good? would you replace the 80gb ( 7200 rpm) HDD a higher capacity HDD ( 5400 rpm) ..size or speed? considering it came with windows vista, which takes about 15gbs...and im not downgrading to xp, when i did that on my M5500, it locked my HDD, and i couldnt get into my system..thanks in advance

newegg has 2 gigs dual channel ram for 90 bucks.. you will have to get 200pin SO-DIMM DDR2 CL4 or CL5... the m9750 will only recognize around 3 gigs of RAM due to the OS...its a microsoft thing...being a 32 bit OS...

you will need to get like a 2X1 gig sticks to get dual channel..I have G.skill ram in mine and it runs great and installed easily...

i dont think a 512mb and a 1 gig stick will let you have dual channel...

thanks..if i was going to buy that one i showed you, i would buy 2 not just one, i was just looking for the cheapest one, that was like 26 dollars..so 52 bucks for 2gbs ram isnt bad, but whatever i'll go with what you told me, you have experience with the system, thank you so much

the ram you showed is not dual channel... just putting one of them in wont give u dual channel...
you would have to purchase the RAM under the tab showing either 512x2 or 2x1 or 2x2 gigs of RAM...
cheapest is not always the best....kept that in mind when shopping for computer parts look for the reviews and see what people think about the product...

oh wow..thanks again for your help

hopefully that will help you decide on ur RAM...but i dont think u can use 512 and a1 or 2 gigs and get dual channel but i may be wrong i think they have to be the same size RAM to be dual channel..hence 2x1 2x2 or 512x512...

with the hard drive you can add another drive in the other slot...i would get a bigger drive if you play alot of games or you have alot of information that you need for school.. I have a 160 external harddrive and i store alot of my info on it... and kept my games on the computer...

you cant use 800 mhz RAM u need 667 mhz RAM...it needs to be PC5300....

there are two slots on the left side of the m9750 where two hard drives can be placed your hardrive from alienware is in slot 1 and slot 2 is completely empty unless you got like a 80x2=160gigs...you can order another hardrive off the internet and then just install the hardrive from what i have heard the screws will not be included with the new hardrive so take two off the other one and place it on the new one...

wow really, i had no idea, i gotta open it up and see. i have an external sata HDD 120gb, i can take it out of the enclosure and install it in the system right, it doesnt necessarily have to be the same capacity as the primary hdd , right? not like the ram
post #18 of 73
the external 120 gig will not be a 2.5 inch drive...it will be a 3.5 so it wont fit...

no dude its a 2.5 laptop external harddrive, the small ones, not the power operated 3.5 externals, this one fits in my back pocket.and powers
post #20 of 73
if its a serial ata 1.5G/s 2.5 inches laptop hardrive then it will work just screw the hardrive to the panel and insert....
i didnt know they had the 2.5 inch drives in the external drives...is it a small external drive that people use to take on trips...
