7800go gtx and thermal pads

So recently I was suffering from slight artifacting in games and atitool. So I brought my clock speed to stock and it's ok now. My friend says that thermal pads are not efficient when reused (I did open up the comp and apply as5 to the gpu at two different times).

So my question is, where can I buy new thermal pads for my cpu? Or better yet, can I just fill in the thermal pad area with as5 instead or is there too much gap for thermal paste to sit properly? I'd like to avoid the whole copper plate idea, that seems a bit too advanced for me.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Thermal pads suck, but at least they suck. If you add more layers of anything to it it will just create more heat transferance resistance. That means bad.

Simply try to just use AS5 by mounting it as you would and then taking it apart again without using and see if it is smeared out.

Having said that, what kind of machine do you have?

I have a xps gen 2. And just in case I didn't word my thoughts clearly enough, I was talking about completely removing the blue thermal pads and putting as5 where the pad should be, not adding as5 to the pads. Just wondering if the gap might be too large to apply as5 there without it jiggling around and leaking out of the designated area. Thanks for responding though.

Ah... actually I have an XPS gen 2 and I already did it.
I'm not sure if you can remove the pads as easily on a 6800U as you can on the 7800GTX, but it worked just fine for me. I think the boards and coolers are identical so it should work.

The best test for you is to apply the AS5 place the heat snk assy back on, then remove it and confirm that the AS5 is making proper contact with the Heat sink.

yes applying AS5 to GPU/CPU should not be an issue on your Gen 2 ( did it to mine) Just don't remove the thermal pads on the GPU RAM, as there is a gap too big for AS5.

@everybody - thanks for your responses
@tijert - when you mentioned removing your thermal pads on your 6800, did you replace them with another thermal pad? or did you fill in the gap with something else?

As for applying as5 on the center area of the gpu where the old dell gunk used to be, I've done that already along with the cpu. I was primarily asking about alternatives for gpu memory cooling instead of the default blue thermal pads. I wonder if new pads would help.

you can look into 3M thermal pads, but you probably aren't going to get too much out of it. I don't even use it on mine.
