Methanol Fuel Cells for laptops?

There's a news report on Yahoo right now about a new Samsung portable fuel cell that can provide up to ten hours of power to a laptop (even if it hasn't been released yet). Ten hours on one battery... Wow, i want one.

Of course, when my 8790 gets here (hopefully in working order), it would only get about fifteen minutes out of that cell, by the way these monsters sound. lol.

There's a big difference between reports on new products and the real performance of the retail product when it gets released. I have yet to see hard numbers on voltage, current and overall capacity. I distrust estimates on the number of hours of battery life. There are too many variables the marketing people can hide behind. What kind of machine, what kind of usage?

Fuel cells are going to replace a lot of battery packs. I've been following the evolution for a couple of years. Here is a good link. http://www.mhtx.com/

Granted, Marquisdarquis, but you have to admit, the thought of a ten hour laptop battery is very cool. *grins* We'll probably never see one, and even if there is, it'll be more expensive then the moon, but the thought is fun enough.

where was *I* when i was 13?! jesus.

what do you NEED a $3000 notebook for at 13? besides video games, you might as well just buy a desktop and save the money. your school isn't intensive where it warrants a laptop unless you're already in college.

besides, someone might jump you for your laptop!

Do you really want to have to fuel up your laptop every ten hours??

Thats basically what we do right now. *grins* Besides, ten seconds at a gas pump is alot better then four or five at a power terminal. Almost as cheap, too. lol.

Oh come on, and why do you _need_ this laptop? Did i hear video games? Ya i thought so. Dont give me this "i take notes" crap, i would never use an 8790 for notes, why not get something which costs a third as much and runs longer? Oh ya, it does not play video games. Only people here who possibly have an excuse for spending this much on a laptop to not play games are those of you interested in cad/video editing, and even then why not get something with a crappier video card? Oh ya, thats right, for video games. Thats why i got mine. Be honest, none of us _need_ this laptop, we all just think it is cool to have a notebook that packs the power of a desktop.

some people have space constraints. i.e. cannot fit a full desktop (which is much more practical, utilitary and cheaper) into their luggage when the move to japan. (or their new tiny sardine can apartment.)

just a thought.

actually, i design games, so i NEED a powerful notebook . really though, it's rather rediculous that a 13 year old would have ANYTHING worth $3000.

when i was 14, i got a job so i could buy my 1000 pair of turntables. it took me a year, but i got them!

I went to the hydrogen convention in denver in Q4 2003 and NEC had a booth setup displaying some less than adequate images of their fuel cell powered laptop. One thing i noted was that they plan to introduce it some time in 2k5. thats right around the corner. course, its all speculatory at this stage. There is hardly anything in view that shows hydrogen actually being reduced to a price that is affordable in comparison to the price of research and testing, eh?

Try taking *those* on an airplane.. Can you say *fuel cell bomb*??? Scary thought! Wonder if this battery would become one of the "prohibited" items..

When I was 13, I don't think I knew what I laptop was...

but then again, when I was 13, Dell and SETI were founded... don't think laptops really existed then

When I was 13 slide rulers ruled the world. Electronic calculators didn't exist. The first one of those I ever saw cost well over $100. It was a desktop model and only had 4 functions. They weren't allowed in schools either.

As far as a need for powerful laptops, my 8790 goes to work and back with me every day. I did the strong desktop weak laptop routine for a while. I was always finding that I had forgotten a file I needed on the desktop. I decided not to use a desktop anymore. I found the average laptop to be very inadequate for my daily needs. My first power notebook was my 8887. Now its my 8790. Is it a need? No, I won't die without it. It is a great convenience though and everyone at work likes to come by and look at the WSXGA+ screen no matter what it has on it just to marvel at it. I kind of like that too unless I'm involved in something I need to be concentrating on. It really is a luxury, but it is one I can justify.
