Hi New member here,
Thanks to this forum I got my Vista running on 4.0 rating with Aero on my m5500.

I have a 256mb Geforce go 6600 but want to know if the 512mb geforce go 7600 will work? I know the 256mb geforce go 7600 will work with a heatsink mod.

It currently has the 1600x1050 resolution screen and I was wondering if I can upgrade to this:

Just a bump I upgraded my 5500 with a 160gig 5400rpm HD and the performance score in Vista is .1 higher than the original 7200rpm 80gig hd.

Also can anyone answer my GPU and screen question?

no you cant install a 512 geforce go 7600, that system only uses 128 and 256 geforce go 6600, or ati Graphic cards of the same specs

i recently got rid of my m5500, i sold it for 850 on ebay, with 128mb and a spare 256mb nvidia, and sold a sentia for parts..with that money, and some money i saved up, i just got myself an m9750, and i love it..anyway point is you cant upgrade the GC more then 256 on the m5500 model.

as for the lcd..i cant even tell you, you should ask the seller they know alot about alienware, infact most of the items they carry are alienware parts, i think they are a reseller, i bought my 256 geforce go 6600 from them.dirt cheal too ( 52 bucks)..

I wanted to upgrade my 5500. Talked to tech support and found out that it would require a new mobo. Not worth it. I can still get Neverwinter Nights 2 to run at 20 fps with the go6600. It may not be top of the line, but is certainly playable.

Playing with 20 fps is not fun man.

I'd say it's time to save up the cash for a new computer.

That is incorrect info you can upgrade to a 7600 geforce go which is a 25% increase in benchmark scores, the only thing is your heat sink need to have a square milled into it, you can use a dremel. The m5500 is an excellent laptop if you put time into it like I did to make Vista work upgrade the Ram and HD as well as DVD DL burner. I just ordered both the screen and 7600 go card for it and I scored my laptop for 700 bucks on Ebay. It should last me a couple years minimum as I have a desktop for the hardcore games.

I just ran across this article on upgrading to the 7600 card. It may be something that I want to do to my m5500 one day...

Just a bump that the Hi res screen works great, system will only recognize 2 gigs of the 4 gigs of ram I put in it and refuses to boot with both 2 gig sticks installed I have to pull one out then it will recognize it as a 2 gig stick. Also if I boot it with one 2 gig stick and another 1 gig stick it only recognizes 2 gigs in the Bios and OS.

As for the GPU upgrade I bought the 7600 card from MXMupgrade.com and it came with mounting studs so it does not fit in my computer, I was the first customer to receive on with mounting studs so now I am trying to get an exchange so I trust that the seller is a good guy and am not sweating it.

That sucks it only sees 2 gigs no matter what. How was MXMupgrade to deal with?

You'll need a bios update for your laptop to recognize the 2G sticks... Not sure there is one for the 5500, but I think there is for the newer 5550, 5750, 5790 laptops.
