Audio driver wont install properly on 9860

Thread Starter
Fresh install of XP SP2, H8S8 firmware, R105B bios, all original hardware of the first 9860 version.

After installing the chipset drivers and rebooting, I install the audio drivers, and upon rebooting again I get the error

"Cann't find Match Realtek HDAudio Inf File"

and in device manager there remain 39 yellow entries of

"Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus"

Ive spent the last 16 hours searching for any relevant information about this problem, most of the threads regarding it are years old and contain broken links to drivers, those that arent broken I have tried using repeatedly in different combinations of chipset and audio driver versions. The typical solution of "delete the MSHDQFE folder" only results in the error occuring before the reboot instead of after. The other solution about installing the modem drivers first doesnt work either. I have tried at least 3 versions of the chipset driver and 4 versions of the audio driver, including both the ones I was using before my reinstall, and the most recent ones Ive been able to find. Ive also tried it both before and after running through Windows Update. I had no such problems before I reinstalled, and the only reason I did was that it had been 2 years since I last reinstalled and my system was a bit sluggish with a bunch of applications I dont use anymore. I never expected any problem like this or I would have left well enough alone.

I am extremely frustrated at this point, is there any further advice anyone can offer? Working links to working drivers? Specific order of installation? Registry tweaks? I am desperate to resolve this. Thanks.

What was the version of the Realtek Drivers you were using that worked ?

Try this
1. Uninstall the Modem Drivers - reboot is asked
2. Uninstall KB888111 - reboot if asked
3. Uninstall Realtek drivers. - reboot if asked

--------------------------------------------

4. Install Modem Drivers - Reboot when asked
5. After reboot go into Device Manager and disable the modem.
6. Now install the Realtek drivers.

Only use the modem when needed (leave it disabled). If you reboot make sure the modem is disabled first.

I hate to say this, but this happened to me also. But I happened to have a Win XP Gold disk pre service packs.

I rolled the sata drivers up into the basic Win XP (using nlite) installation and burned to CD. Reformatted C, and reinstalled windows. Once that was done I installed SP1a.

Once thing I did notice from attempts with SP2 rolled up CD installations and this method, no infinite modems in the device manager.

I used only the drivers on the Sager site for my 9880 (pretty much the same for the 9860)

Chipset no problem
rebooted
Audio no problem this time, no stupid (Cann't message)
Rebooted
Modem no problem,
rebooted
Applied SP2
rebooted
LAN no problem
Nvidia drivers, I recommend downloading the latest and getting the inf (nv4_disp.inf, place in the Nvidia folder where setup is, replace current inf if asked.) from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com or just download the package from them.
The rest of the drivers from the Sager site install without a hitch.

It seems that the realtek audio and the POS smart link modem have problems installing under SP2, but under SP1 they install flawlessly.

recommend running windows update from the website (since windows update with detect the driver updates also for realtek and update your drivers also) or you can just run wuauclt /detectnow and update the drivers individually from the manufactures websites.

Well the original versions of the 9860 form Nov 2004 stopped working when Realtek added KB888111 to their drivers. The only way to solve this problem is to install KB835221 instead. Also Vista and later versions of Linux will not work with sound. After removing the modem, no problem with the sound in XP, Vista, or Linux. I have a PCMCIA Modem card but won't use since going to Cable. I have another old laptop that still has a 2.5 hour battery in case the power goes out and need to use the phone line.
