Compare HP dv6500tSE, Apple MacBook Pro, LG S1-QP0149

So I need to get a new notebook since my last was stolen. I've basically narrowed my choices down to 3. I'd like some opinions on which would be the better deal. I'm not too worried about price. The 3 I'm interested in, I believe would be within price. The HP is a little more because of a HD DVD drive, that I'm not particularly interested in. However, since I don't like in the states, I can't buy it direct from HP with the specifications I'd like.

I'm looking for something mainly for daily use, and gaming. I'm looking for something that is also appealing to look at, and will function well.

So here are my options:

HP dv6500tSE
  • Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7700 (2.40 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
  • 15.4" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
  • 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
  • 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
  • HP Imprint (Influx) + Fingerprint Reader
  • Webcam (Built into screen)
  • Microphone (Built into screen)
  • Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection
  • Bluetooth(TM)
  • 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • HD DVD ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
  • HP ExpressCard Digital/Analog TV Tuner
  • 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
  • System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
  • Microsoft(R) Office Basic 2007
  • HP Optical USB Mobile Mouse (White)
  • Mobile Stereo Headset (1 pair, White)
  • Mobile Stereo Earbud Headphones (1 pair)
  • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
  • www.hp.com It's the dv6500t Special Edition notebook under the entertainment sections of notebooks. Basically the fully loaded or highest specs available for it. It's customizable on their website. Just go to shop and you can find it, and find out more of the specs.
Apple MacBook Pro
  • 15" MacBook Pro Glossy Widescreen Display //
  • 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 1440 x 900 resolution
  • 2GB memory
  • 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
  • 8x double-layer SuperDrive
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 128MB SDRAM
  • http://www.apple.com/ca/macbookpro/specs.html (It's the cheapest MacBook Pro with an upgrade to the hard-drive)
LG S1-QP0149
  • 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7400
  • 2GB DDR2 667MHz
  • ATI® Mobility™ Radeon® X1600 (256MB VRAM,
    *HyperMemory™ Support)
  • 160GB (SATA)
  • 15.4" WSXGA + (1680x1050) Fine Bright Technology
  • SRS WOW HD, SRS TruSurround XT, 5.1CH Dolby Digital,
    24bit High Definition, Internal MIC
  • Intel® Pro/Wireless 3945ABG(802.11a/b/g)
  • 3 year warranty
  • 6 Cell (Li-Ion)
  • :Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
  • DVD Super Multi Dual Layer (DVD-R/RW, +R/RW, RAM)
  • Fingerprint, HDD Security
  • http://ca.lge.com/en/products/model/...s1qp01a9.jhtmlBase model, no additional features, but may look into getting the 9 cell battery instead.
So those are my options. I'm not particularly familiar with Macs and Mac operating systems. Everyone has good things to say, but that would be my first Mac, so I'm a little hesitant. I've heard some good/some bad about the LG. And the HP is mostly a special edition, very nice looking laptop. Opinions great and small appreciated and encouraged. I'd like to have as good an idea as I can of each laptop before purchasing one over the other.

Any feedback appreciated.

I dont see prices, and you contridicted yourself saying price isnt a problem then
saying the 3 were in the price range?

i say screw all of them, and get an Asus, or Sager NP2090

www.xoticpc.com

unsure if they ship to hockey town but they may

for Asus, check out Asus G1

Oooh... Sorry if I'm confusing. All within price range means nothing that's 3000+. That doesn't eliminate much, and even then I'm not worried about more than that if I find something that is OMG amazing.

And I should of said... I'm not really looking for anything beyond a 15.4" screen. If you have other recommendations let me know.

As for the Sager, I looked at it, but to me it just doesn't look stylish enough. I'm a girl and looking for something "Pretty", as well as functional.

Keep looking around. The HP and the LG both have shared memory graphics. The mac only has 128mb. All three are for gaming.

I have a brand new 6500... the graphics are 128 with the rest shared... little trick pulled by HP.

The 6500 is a darn fine machine for business use... and for general carry, it is light (or lighter than any other 15.4 notebook I've held).

It will play light games great... really depends on the games. I play one game: chess... and it plays very, very well.... Others have said they have to lower resolution for the "real" games... I made a little joke about games since you included a mac in your list... macs don't do games, unless in bootcamp... then you might as well have a pc. I *love* my mac... they are great machines. (No mac bashing here, just the cold and hard truth.)

If you play a lot of games, then go with something that gamers normally get... if you want to stick with hp, then the 9500 notebook might be a better option, but it has a 17'' screen.

The X1600 with Hypermemory is shared. That's what Hypermemory means is shared. I have had an ATI based laptop with Hypermemory and it sucked. Read and learn my friend: http://ati.amd.com/technology/hypermemory.html I have never heard of a laptop graphics card with 383MB ram. It's either 128 or 256 or 512. Never 383 MB. It has to be shared to use an odd amouunt of memory like that. From HP. If the system comes with 1gb ram the video card will have 128mb onboard and share an additional 256 of system Ram. A big problem I'm finding is that all the nice stylish looking gamer notebooks are 17". I'm not looking for something that large. Yes the Asus G1 is good specs wise. But from my girlie point of view, just not pretty enough on the outside.

I'm hard to please. The Sager 5790 looks nice, if only it came in 15.4" not just 17".

ummm yes i know i have a x1700 256mb 512 with hypermem but it is NOT shared memory 128, its shared memory 256, shared implies that its on board pos graphics, x1600 is far from pos graphics if youre gonna call it somthing call it what it is, Hypermemory, not shared OT: who makes LG laptop chasis? that model looks pretty cool soulsaver

sigh i give up, eaither way i know what the hell hypermem is, in no way is it crappy or whatever you want to clown it for

x1600 is a very nice buget video card, dont knock it just cause its hypermem

im not gonna get back on that subject, youre misunderstanding

and OP has the option to cut it off if he so chooses

. Not much to misunderstand. Shared memory is shared memory. Simple.

I'm not saying your vid card is crappy. I'm just saying it is shared memory. My ATI vid card with Hypermemory sucked but it was a X300 128MB. I'm sure the X1600 is a much better card by far
