Problem with laptop with S/PDIF, ACER Aspire 5612 WLMi Realtek Audio Intel HD

Hello everyone, I know there were similar topics but none of them actually helped me out.
I have a problem with my laptop and it's spdif optic output. I want to connect it to my hi-fi but I am having trouble with enabling digital output. I just don't know how to do it
In my Realtek Mixer there are options only for analog outputs - no digital options at all. I use now the newest drivers, 1.70 or 1.77 - nothing. I've tried older versions, something like 1.30 and then spdif flashed red colour and I thought that it will be OK, but nope. Still no sound and no digital options in Realtek's mixer. On these new drivers (1.7x) it doesen't ever light up.
Someone here said that one cannot acutally see the LED inside blinking, well... I can see it As I told before on older drivers it's "on" all the time - althou no sound.
In the other topics I've read that one has to change default output to digital output - I see no such option, if I am just blind and retarded then someone posting a screenshot would be nice

Regards,

simh

The enable digital output check box is located in the XP volume control... You have to enable the Advanced Controls (if it's not greyed out) under the Options menu.

I have no such option. When I enable "advanced" in XP mixer the only advanced options are under microphone. In this mixer I have only: Master, Wave, SW, Line-in, Mic, CD, PC Beep. No SPDIF at all...

Any other suggestions?

hmm.. not really.... updated drivers is about all I can think of. I haven't dealt with spdif or optical sound much.

You should have a Realtek applet in Control Panel. Run it, it will display Realtek settings in that weird green skin. Check the Audio I/O tab, there should be digital output there and (hopefully) a "wrench" button next to it. There you can configure S/PDIF.
You need a proper driver version that "knows" about digital output in your laptop model. Realtek constantly updates their driver adding this. But the best approach would be to get driver from Acer FTP for a particular laptop model.
The fact that you see red light emitting from headphone connector means you do have S/PDIF and it's on. But it could be set to output 48KHz signal only (DVD) and not to convert regular digital or analog sources. That's the setting you are after.
If you have a desktop with Realtek chip, you may try a trick and find Registry entries for various settings and then mimic those in Registry on your laptop.
