#M1004 error message on Dell XPS gen 2 laptop

Hey, I'm running a Dell XPS laptop with Nvidia geForce 7800GTX graphics card. We recently took the machine apart gave it a dust out and reapplied the TIM and reinstalled windows. I was experiencing problems before such as games borking and vectorising. Now however games are running slightly better but around 10 or 15 minutes into a game my computer completely shuts down, upon restart my fans are running at full speed in DOS mode and I'm getting a black screen with error message '#M1004'. My headphone jack was broken a couple of months ago and the jack has inserted itself under the motherboard, could this be an issue? The laptop is reaching temperatures of around 60-70 deg C before shutting down. I'm running the graphics card on TweaksRUs 163.44 driver.

Anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be: graphics card or motherboard?

Cheers

The TIM that came with the laptop isn't the best I would suggest taking the machine apart & purchasing some AS5, which can be found at Radioshack and other computer equipment retailers. Apply the AS5 to the CPU as directed in this FAQ & it should resolve your issues.

If I remember correctly there were also BIOS updates to help resolve this issue. What BIOS are you currently running?

Thanks, but as I said in the original post, we already re-applied the TIM. Used Cool Silver which is apparently the new best paste available.

Bios version is current.

Well I was unaware you applied a new paste. Saying we reapplied the "TIM" could have meant many things, including reapplying the crappy pad that comes with the system.

I imagine the thermal paste was not applied correctly (it can be tricky & the "X" method doesn't always work) , esp if you do not have the HS centered while applying equal pressure & tightening the screws.

Could be the TIM was incorrectly applied, but I doubt it. I'm pretty good at applying TIM. We're thinking motherboard.......is there any way of narrowing it down to the graphics card or the mobo?

All you can do is run the OBD. fn+power, or at the Dell logo press F12 & select diagnostics. When you get the error you might try turning it off & using the Fn+power option to see if you can test it while the error is present to see if there are any other anomolies.

Ah yeah, forgot about the Dell Diagnostics. Thanks for your help so far
