Precision M6300 Video Card Upgrade Questions

Was wondering if anyone has tried to put a 7950GTX from an M1710 into the Precision M6300. My boss wants me to order one for him but he wants to know if he can put in that card for gaming reasons.

M90 will work w/ 7950/7900GTX, but not the M6300.

I would actually give it a "good" rate of chance. I think even the ATI X300 work in the M1710 so there's no reason to believe the 7950 would not work with a one gen machine upgrade. Even if the newer M1730 and 1720 do not support the 7950, you couldn't weigh that too heavily considering the dissimilarities between the machines.

I agree. I remember a thread here where a user put a 7800GTX in the 1710 and it worked. Dell's machines seem to be backwards compatable just not forward compatable. We need someone here to give it a go to confirm our theory

Yeah the 7800gtx worked in the 9400/1710 with 'light' modification. Unsoldering some keyboard screw column on the motherboard i think.
Might also have been some slight bending involved.

I'd say it'll have 50/50 chance of working. Dell probably won't deliberately screw it up, but there might be physical incompatibilities.

you have to break off 2 pieces of the case in the 9400.

Yea I don't see why it shouldn't work actually.

Oh well ordered my boss a M90 with the 7950GTX equivalent card in it, figured It was safer. Maybe someone out there could test this so we could know for the future, but thanks for the advice.
