Dell System Exchange?

So I have a 640m that I purchased just before the line was discontinued earlier this year and I purchased the 3 year complete care warranty with it. Due to numerous problems and a current outstanding problem Dell said they will give me a system exchange (will find out tomorrow if its approved by the supervisor).

So assuming they grant it, what will I get? New? Refurbished? Same specs? Better specs? I've never had a system exchange done before so I don't know what to expect.

TIA for any insight you can provide.

Most likely a refurbished Dell E1420 they grabbed off of the Dell outlet lists... however, you should most likely see a generous bump in specs. Only bad thing is it takes 10-15business days to ship... so basically after the approval you won't get the replacement notebook for 2-4 weeks .

Atleast that was what happened to me about a year back when my XPS M170 got system exchanged.

My M170 was a 2.0GHz Pentium M, 1GB Ram, 120GB HD 5400, 7800GTX and they ended up giving me a M1710 with a 2.0GHz T7200, 2GB Ram, 7950GTX and a 100GB 7200 HD.

Definitely a nice upgrade and helped me recover from my notebook withdrawals since I was without a working notebook for over three weeks.

Hmm any chance of me getting new laptop rather than a refurb? Its only a few months old and the specs were decent, 2 gb ram, 120 gb hd, 1.73 core 2 duo, bt, intel wireless abg, integrated graphics.

I do not want a 640m back though, and I know there are still a few out there lurking around.

If theres a 640m available through the outlet you will get it. Almost 0 chance of you getting a new one although it does happen some times. No worries though as I've had no problems out of the refurbs from dell. Most of the time you get a refurb or a return used. Check out outlet.dell.com... If no 640m's are available through the outlet you will get a comparable model like a 1420. You will almost certainly get a spec boost here and there. I would definitely expect a faster proc than the 1.73.

Well I see none on Dell Outlet, but I see lots on dfsdirect.ca :S

I live in Canada

They can't give me lower specs right? They have to be all the same or better right?

Correct they won't give ya worse specs. Equal or better. I'm not sure if you still see them there's a chance you could get one. Anybody had a 640m replaced lately? To be honest I kind of expect you to get a new model after checking into it a little. Thats the thing, if they exchange you out with the limited supply of 640m's its difficult to find a comparable spec laptop.

I am somewhat in the same boat as you. I am going to call in for a system exchange after my laptop fell off my kitchen island, on top of that it had being giving me lots of problems before hand and was thinking of calling in anyways. Its a 600m with Complete Care.

I was wondering, if there is anything i should know before calling in to get the best possible replacement, or is it just luck. Also what can i expect as a replace for a 600m.

Usually, any system exchange that involves exchanging to a new one is only if the defective notebook is within the 21 day period. After that, you'd almost always get a refurb laptop, with either the same specs or better, never usually lesser. Any exchanged laptop has the same warranty that the original contained. So not to worry about that.

My system exchange finally got approved. Someone should be contacting me early next week to tell me what system and specs I should be getting.

Still no contact... should I be calling them to make sure they give me a good system?

Update: So while I did call in, they were not able to tell me the specs, however the system arrived today and sadly its not up to par.

Problems:

640m
- High Res 1440 x 900 Screen
- Additional 9 cell 85 WHr Battery
- Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
- Intel Wireless 4965AGN Mini-Card

New 1420
- 1280 x 800 Screen
- No Additional Battery
- No Bluetooth
- Intel Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card

The only upgrade I got between the 640m and the 1420 is that the 1420 has a 2.0 GHz processor rather than the 1.73 GHz processor on the 640m. Both are Core 2 Duo's.

I'm not pleased, but on a positive note the major issue that I was having with the 640m has been resolved with the 1420. I called in and complained, so we shall see what happens now.

Update:

Looks like they are going to send a tech to swap out the parts, still waiting to hear back about the battery though.
