Well, the new ubuntu release is right around the corner, and i know i will be downloading it the day it comes out.

making a thread so you guys can post comments about the distro itself and your experiences with gusty after you install it. (assuming people actually do)

not for at least the next few releases. their goal is to provide the most painless experience for as many systems as possible, which means i386 will be part of the picture for quite some time to come.

that said, you are probably better off getting Beta and just dist-upgrading because there will be a massive rush on release day to get the final and servers will be mega-laggy for like a week.

i for one will probably not get it. I don't see any features in this release as down right awesome that i can't easily get in some other (faster...ie not i386) distro.

and yes i am picky about speed. last night i gave up my arch in favor of trying mandriva 2008 (you know i like mandriva/pclos) and even though i always considered PCLOS to fast (and it is a little faster than Mandriva) there is a huge difference that i can feel between mandriva and arch.

gusty story:

my dad wants some helpwith his xp computer. fairly old but hes upgraded some of the components, got an audigy 4 and extra ram so it still runs pretty well and does his music stuff well. (hes a music guy)

so he ended up having a trojan horse and i didnt wanna risk trying to remove it and having traces left behind. so i install windows for him, drivers and all his software. and then i install gusty on a second partition.

he boots it and goes into gusty, not realizing. he asks me what it is and after showing it to him for awhile, he loved it. some software is windows only but it works well in wine.

happy i got someone else to use linux, i told him if he doesnt like it just ask and ill wipe it out, so far hes just been breezing along.

Cool. I'm downloading the .iso right now - 2% complete and expected to finish in over 2 hours because there are a whole lot of other people also downloading the .iso right now

Posting from Gutsy LiveCD

I'm impressed so far: This is the first time I've been able to boot into a Linux distribution in native resolution. Even the Ubuntu logo at the beginning was formatted correctly (not stretched), which is a first. And my screen resolution AND refresh rate are both correctly displayed (the screen refresh rate never showed correctly in Feisty except in Nvidia settings). My touchpad works perfectly, including scrolling. I had to mess with both Dapper and Feisty in that regard. And of course I'm posting so my ethernet connection works fine. Time to install this thing and see what else it's got!

Nice. DJ Going to DL it tonight as long as I am not busy.

okay, it's installed now, so I'll add a couple more thoughts:

CPU Frequency Scaling works fine in the generic kernel (it didn't in Feisty)

Enabling desktop effects is a snap, but I haven't yet found what controls which effects are used

Going into suspend works (it didn't in Feisty), but coming out of suspend does NOT work

My printer, a Canon Pixma iP4500, is a brand new model in the Canon Pixma iP4xxx series. It was recognized as iP4500 and Gutsy selected the driver for the iP4000 for it, which successfully made the printer go through the printing process but didn't actually make it print anything.

NTFS-3g is installed by default, so I have read-write access to my Windows partition.

Holy crap. Sounds good so far. I had Suspend in Feisty so lets see if it still works. Wonder if Suspend will work on Nyako's Sager?

it's possible. I don't know. She's got a different chipset.
What chipset are you running DJ?

I have Intel 915. Nyako I believe is Intel 945. (I think)
I've got Intel 915

Really, I wonder why you cant suspend then? I have no problems with mine in Fiesty.
beats me. It could have something to do with the motherboard or sleep state or some other funky thing. I could hibernate in Feisty, but not suspend.
