College Notebook Advice

Thread Starter
Hi there. I know there are a lot of these sort of questions being posted about the various forums, but I still feel a little unsure about some things. Next fall I will be going to college, and currently I am leaning more towards a notebook, rather than a traditional desktop.

The university I will most likely be attending has wireless internet, so that would be pretty sweet with a mobile device. I'm very certain if I do decide to purchase a notebook, it will be from powernotebooks.com. With that said, I'm torn between some different models. As I said, I have been looking around these forums, as well as the powernotebooks.com forums and do have some basic knowledge/expectations for different models. So I don't consider myself totally clueless here.

Models that I like so far:

-Sager
8790
8890
5680

I am really hoping this computer I will buy will be able to last me all 4 years through college, but I won't hold my breath on that one.

Most of the time, it would probably stay in my dorm, of course. But I would like the option and freedom of being able to move my working area, if necessary. That is what appealed to me about a notebook. I am thinking, most, if not all places I might go to get some work done (library, whatever), would have power outlet available, so battery life would be less of an issue. I also like the keyboard size of most of the Sager's, with full number pad, etc. Seems like that would give the hands less strain and be easier to type with for long periods of time.

As far as widescreen, I guess widescreen would be first choice, but it is not something at the very top of my list, as far as important features go. The biggest thing that concerned me with the 'desktop-replacement' was heat/noise issues. Some people seem to think the noise of them when the fans spin up is a bit excessive, while others seem to think it is not very noticable at all. Just wondering approximetely how loud some of these machines get when they get hot (compared to some other device, appliance, whatever). Just want to be conscience of my room mate, and don't want anything too loud.

I do play games, but not to a great extent, probably less once I get to college (it's located in Daytona Beech, Florida ), but I like to keep that option open. Of course it's not the same as a full blown desktop system, but seems pretty darn close.

I have built 6 computers total, for myself and friends, so I guess I would consider myself more of a "power user" and less of the "typical" user. So having the extra computing power is a plus for me. Also, doubt that it matters but my planned major is Aerospace Engineer.

Anyone who has been-there-done-that that might have any advice would greatly be appreciated. Actually anyone who has any advice would be appreciated . The models I mentioned are what I think I have to down to. Any comments/advice on anything on any of them would be of help to me, I'm sure (widescreen, mobilty, gaming, anything). I know the advice you might give will proably be biased/opinionated, but that is fine, obviously this comes down to what fits my needs best, just wanted some advice and think things through thouroughly before I make the purchase. Thanks in advance for any help!

To quote the 'movie guy'...

"If you like powernotebooks, you'll LOVE pctorque. Same stuff, same prices, but great service. Plus, they maintain these boards which are an excellent reference/resource.

I have a 4780 which is very very similar to the 8790 in terms of dimensions. I also have a Dell I8200 which is similar in dimensions to the 5680. Of the two, I don't feel any difference in terms of 'bulkiness' or ease of travel (both suck in that way equally).

Given that, I'd suggest the 8790.

pctorque

Thanks for the advice. I'll give PCTorque a serious look. I briefly looked around earlier and things seemed to be about the same, but these boards would be a big plus I'd have to agree.

Forget the 5680 as an option, the 5690 is now out for the same price, but with an ATI 9700 video card instead of the 9600:

So with the 5690 having the ati 9700, the 8890 will still keep the 9600 pro til it is replaced i assume?

Yes, various options are being looked at with the 8890 and we're not sure what will come of it as of right now. With the 16" LCD being gone, it's hard telling.

Hey, would that college in Daytona Beach happen to be Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University?

Haven't thought of Embry-Riddle in quite some time. Though not hailing from that particular Florida school myself, have several Embry-Riddle alumni in the family. Wouldn't perchance be one as well, aegdaien, would you?

(an alumni, mind you, and not a lost member of my family.)

if the 16" was still available, i'd go with the 8890 (its what i have...) while its not exactally everyday portable, i take it with me to classes etc about 3 days a week...

Forget 5690 if you want full sized keyboard and num pad, if thats important to you, otherwise its a GREAT machine (happy 5680 owner)!

I'm really thinking about taking classes at ERAU! Does anyone know what type of CAD programs they use there? Thanks...

Actually no, I don't attend ERAU, however I was admitted there for the upcoming year (Will be a freshmen as of August again, haha). I decided not to attend there and to attend Georgia Tech instead. I visited the ERAU campus several times and have friends who go there, it's a great place. Figured that was probably a pretty popular college in Daytona Beach, which was why I asked.

411 sponge-

not sure if this helps at all, but at the ERAU website there is a page that shows different software they have available there/use. This might not even apply but it might. here is the link http://www.erau.edu/db/technologydb/software.html

Aerospace Engineering as well. that is pretty sweet! I'm not 100% sure i am going there, but pretty certain at this point. do you have any clue if students actually run that software on their own computers, or if it is all done in-class on the college owned computers. It might make a difference in the 'computing power' needed by my own personal computer. I'm really not sure on this one, thought maybe you or someone else might have had friends or whatever in college and might know something of this. thanks.

I am also doing the Air Force ROTC deal, kinda strange, heh. Do you want to fly planes in the Air Force?
Yeah, I'd love to fly once I go into the service. With any luck I'll be able to, provided my eyesight holds and my grades stay up. Did you apply for a scholarship through ROTC? Anway, don't get me wrong about ERAU or anything, it was my first choice for a long time before I decided to go to GT. I just ended up visiting GT and liking it overall a bit better. Plus the entire campus being Coke sponsered is nice (Coke building is next door), haha. Was accepted to Purdue and Michigan as well, however I'm from Pennsylvania and I'm about ready to get away from the cold for a while, so I'm looking to stay south. If you want to chat with me about it sometime my AIM screenname is right under my user name here.

Oh and in regards to the software question, I believe most of the stuff that's used in classes can be put on your laptop/pc so that you can work on homework in the dorms and whatnot. Although there may be a case or two where the company may not allow free distribution, even within campus, I couldn't tell ya. I'm looking to get a Sager 8790 because I would like to do some gaming in my free time, while being able to take it over to the library/coffee shop without too much trouble and use wifi there.
