M1330 and HSDPA

I'm thinking to but the XPS M1330.. There is an option for AT&T HSDPA built-in card... I'm thinking to use it in Europe but i don't want to use the external Express-Card adapter... So, i have couple questions

1- Is it locked to Cingular/AT&T?
2- If it's locked, can i unlock it?
3- Can i use it in Europe?
4- Can i add it later (again, not the express-card)??

More than likely the card is locked. I don't know if there's an unlocked one available from spare parts or not.

Europe uses different HSDPA frequencies. You need something like the Dell 5505 or 5520 (I think) - both of which are not locked to a particular network.

I pay £1 per day for unlimited HSDPA on a pay as you use basis in the UK. So I just top up with £10 and it lasts me a month or so as I use the cellular network infrequently.

Dell's on board 5520 is locked to a Vodafone Contract Sim. They assurred me on purchase of my 1520 that it would work with any valid Vodafone Sim, as I have a PAYG one I use for overnight stops away from the office. It does not recogise the sim, and says it may be inserted wrongly. My O2 contract sim is recognised immediately (but won't dial out). My wife's Vodafone contact sim was recognised immediately (and did dial out, much to her annoyance).
I am now forced to change my contract from O2 to Vodafone later this year, on it expiring.
Vodafone's shops tell me they have no valid reason to keep me off the Web, as I have paid in advance for the use of it, and that this is a Dell thing to force users into yet another contract, something I have resisted down the years.
If anyone out there knows how to "tweak" the software to use a PAYG sim, then I would be delighted to hear from them

Jahboo on this tread, I think is talking about a "short term" Vodafone contact, and not true PAYG. As I said in my other posting, the 5520 software is programed to look for a Contract Sim, and reject PAYG ones.

Anyone out there know different ??

I too have a Dell 5520 HSDPA card. The laptop originally came with the Vodafone sim inserted. I removed that and dropped in a 3 Sim. The software picks up the sim and registers it successfully to the 3 network. I then created a new profile for 3. If you are planning to use it on O2, you too will need to create a new profile and put in the connection details (ie username, password, APN, DNS, etc) for your network provider. This is probably why it won't "dial out", as I suspect the Vodafone setting are different from O2 like they are for 3.

For the benefit of those who care about such things, using a T-Mobile PAYG sim card in a HSDPA data card is not permitted according to T-Mobile terms of service:

"We do not permit use of this service to provide modem access for a computer or for peer to peer file sharing, internet phone calls or instant messaging. Roaming charges apply."

An alternative is Vodafone - who provide PAYG sim cards that do permit HSDPA modem use. £1 for 15MB use (as opposed to 40MB for T-Mobile) - but it's legit.
