SLI users

Thread Starter
the guys over at laptopvideo2go asked me to write up a news item outlining the problems SLI notebook users face with lack of driver support/updates from vendors/nvidia.

I'd appreciate it if you headed on over to the news thread and then my support thread for any comments/experiences of your own.

You should direct your questions to users in the new NBF mobile system video driver sections here:

You'll get more accurate answers there.

So, after reading the article... Do the laptopvideo2go drivers in fact utilize the SLi capability in an alienware m9700 or m9750?

I'm still confused about the locking and unlocking and what drivers will work for SLi.

Am I stuck using AW's drivers or can I use laptopvideo2go's drivers and modded INF's to utilize SLi?

Sorry if that doesn't make sense...

The m9700 accepts the laptopvideo2go.com drivers as long as you use the modified INF file. At least it does for Windows XP.

Only issue I've had is nTune doesn't work with the m9700 and those drivers, as the m9700 uses a combination of desktop chips, and mobile parts. Just means you can't overclock with nTune or use it for temperature monitoring. The drivers work great for everything else.

The m9750 uses a different chipset due to the C2D processor, so there are some hoops you have to jump through to get the drivers to work, but for the m9700 it's pretty straight forward. DL the driver and modified INF. Unzip the driver, then insert the modified INF into the driver folder and install. Make sure the driver installs for both your vid cards, enable SLI and you're good to go.

I'm among many who have used the modded .inf drivers from Laptopvideo2go and yes they do work with SLi. Thanks to those drivers my BF2142 works like a charm at pretty much full everything including anti-aliasing. In fact I don't think I've had a problem with their drivers. I'm guessing it is the newly released m9750's GTX cards that may be having a tough time dealing with SLI along with Vista which pretty much ruined gaming for the Q2 of this year. I just don't understand it since there were probably many PC owners who spent huge amounts of money to get a dual 8800 machine but were unable to take advantage of it when coupled with their Vista Ultimate purchase as well.

even with single 7950GTX cards im having problems with modified drivers so people with SLI are not alone... its bad that the stock drivers deliver better performance for gaming and everything else...

I don't know if this works, but has any 9750 owner tried using the newest nvapps.xml with the drivers from Alienware? At least that way you may be able to use both cards to play the newest games without having to manually create the SLI profiles. If anyone's interested, i'm attaching the newest xml from nvidia, which already has the SLI profiles for Unreal Tournament 3 and Call of Duty 4. To use it you just have to replace the original file and install the drivers, the same way you use the modified inf from laptopvideo2go.

yeah im using the latest nvapps.xml from the 163.76's. Ive only got 1 driver set other than Alienwares 94.23's to work properly and give me SLI in my m9750 on XP.

the new 163.76's with laptopvideo2go's latest inf version.

SLI finally works, but i get a massive performance drop from 8822 to 6117 in 3Dmark 06.

Don't depend on your 3dmark score as it is not a very good representation of what you real world score is as I had a pretty decent 3dmark score on my m9700 with the stock drivers and once I updated to newer ones it went down however my framerates in the games I played went up significantly due to the fact that they were finally usuable through the SLi profiles. I suggest trying out many different driver issues and seeing which ones works best for the games you play.
