M170 Temps

Hi all,

I recently purchased a M170 with 6800 Ultra off ebay and have been using it for the past week or so. During this time, I have noticed that the temps get quite high when running graphic intensive applications. I currently have an e1705 with a 7900GTX installed so I am familiar with the heat dissipated from a high end graphics card but the M170 seems to get very hot in comparison to my e1705. I am not sure what are considered high temps so I will just post my readings from I8kfan (these are the peak temps):

CPU: 95
GPU: 91
Mem: 77
Chipset: 80

Are these readings too high or about normal?

6800 runs hot

Do you mean in general or mine specifically?

IMO things are a little too high

have you cleaned your fans out ?

Perhaps re-apply the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU

Wow. I just finished running rthdribl for a couple of hours and the GPU temp reached 99 degrees. I guess I do need to clean the fans.

yes at that temp things will not last too long

Well, I finally had time to clean out the the fans and the inside of the laptop. However, it did not appear to help much. After some more temp testing, here is what I found. The temp of the GPU idles at 76 degrees. Once under load, the temp rapidly climbs to 100+ degrees in less than a minute and then the GPU throttles down. The temp then drops to about 93 degrees but continues to rise slowly over the next five minutes. Finally, the GPU throttles back even further to a now steady temp of 90 degrees.

I checked the fans and they all seem to be working properly so there is no underlying cause for the temps to be so high. Could my card just be putting out more heat than most 6800 ultra's?

See my signature for lowering your idle temperatures. The card indeed is running hot and I suppose the computer doesnt have warranty? Anyway, if it doesnt then one option is to apply AS5.

Actually, the computer still has about 1 year of warranty left so I will probably have to call Dell at some point.

How many degrees does AS5 usually lower the temps?

It possible the thermal compound you have right now is crap, and AS5 may fix the problem, but there also could be some other problem.

I would suggest you call Dell now and have them fix it.
