Coolest way to overclock 7900 GS?

Hi,

When I just had my XPS M1710 I flashed it with the "gsx" rom and stock gtx speeds...

Now I flashed my card with the unlocked roms (1,24V) but I think is running hotter now on the GS stock speeds...?

What should I do? I don't play games but I like the performance gain in windows Vista. I was thinking to flash my card again with the "oldfashion GSX rom"...
What would you do?

I just want to keep a cool system....

THX!!!!!!

Now I have flashed my card with this rom: 790GSUOV.ROM

Is it possible to flash it with an unlocked GTX rom? Like this one: 790GTXUO.ROM

Yeh 1.24v does run a lot hotter imo. I prefer 1v (UON) which is a lot cooler, however the clocks speeds shouldn't really matter because you should be running 2d clocks in Vista when not gaming shouldn't you?

Do youe have acess to the unlocked bios for the 7900 GTX? The unlocked bios sticky the links no longer work and with crysis coming out I will want to overclock to squeeze as much out of my GPU as posiable. Would be great if an other forum member uploaded the unlocked bios's somewhere as stated the link no longer works in the sticky. Any help would be apreciated

Your 7900 is already partially outdated, but is still a powerful card when overclocked. I wouldn't think twice about flashing the GTX rom. I ran mine to hell and back clocked at 650/850 and it never gave me any shit. If you were trying to make the card last for five to ten years, maybe then heat and voltage would be a concern. Since computer stuff goes out of date so quickly, there's really no use in babying it. Use it to it's full potential is all I'm stating. If it gets too hot (102C), it will throttle itself, so no need to worry about that. As far as fan control goes, the Dell BIOS does a fine job of cooling. I used I8KFanGUI for about six months, but when I reformatted the other day I didn't reinstall it. There's no need other than temp monitoring. That's my two cents.

LatitudeD820: I see in your signature the confused smiley next to your RAM. 3.25GB usable out of 4GB is normal for our systems.

Now I have installed the drivers form laptopvideo2go.com.

163.75 with modded inf, but I can't overclock it in the Nvidia menu...?
Don't use the Nvidia menu. Use ATITool. If you still can't move the clocks even with that, you may need a 9x.xx driver. They're all the same. I am getting the 3DM'05 score in my signature with the driver off of the Dell website, that's proof enough. Did you flash with the GTX BIOS then?
He is using Vista. With that in mind they certainly are not all the same. I would suggest keeping the 163.75 drivers and see how they work for you. You should be able to overclock just fine with Atitool and that driver set.

Can you please tell what bios that you used to flash the 7900gs to a gtx? I have a rev. 0. But I'm not sure what bios to flash it to.

I have the same issue. Are you referring to JuanLu's ROM's? Can you use the 7900GTX ROM on the 7900GS, either revision 1 or 2?

No. If you flash the GTX BIOS to a rev 1 card, it's toast. You can still get some good gains though. Go here to find out which you have: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread185501.html.

I have a revision 0 card. Would the GTX JuanLu ROM work fine then?
Yes, and that way you can run at 1.24V and get a really descent gain. The ROM should be around 63kb.

Well then I'm going to flash it with the 790GTXU.rom...

If I have the GTX speeds I would be happy
post #17 of 23
I just tried to flash the 790GTXUO.ROM to my 7900GS rev. 0 and got a GPU/Board mismatch error. Do I need to use the -5 -6 switch or somethin?
Never mind I did it, it was /4 /5 /6

Gonna reinstall drivers.
