Thinking about this a little more, I don't think the 766 has a working cpu heat sensor circuit in the motherboard. This was the first laptop to use desktop processors, and it was designed several years ago, so it's not surprising it didn't have all the features we see now.
Also, since it has a desktop processor, comparing temps to mobile processors won't be valid.
It's likely if you're having heat issues that your video module is failing, that's the most common failure with the 766.
Unfortunately, they stopped making these modules years ago when mobiles moved from AGP to PCIe. That means nobody has new modules. I'm not sure the module can be taken apart to apply AS5, or if it would do any good.
