What is a "Security Cable Slot" for?

I have an HP Pavillion model dv2315nr notebook computer, and on the left side where the monitor connects to the keyboard, there is an odd shaped slot that is called a "Security Cable Slot" and I have never heard of this, and was wondering what it is for?

I purchased my computer in June of this year, and today when I turned it on the monitor would not turn on or respond but the keyboard lit up and I am trying to find out if there is a way of fixing this or if the bulb is burned out or what, so I was also wondering if this had anything to do with possibly fixing it by anychance?

sorry, but the security cable slot doesn't affect the operation of your computer in any way. it's just a place to attach a notebook lock so you can tie your notebook down and it won't get stolen.
