This is my first review ever, so here goes and bear with me BACKGROUND
This 9100 is the first laptop I have ever purchased for personal use. The company I work for is, let's say a little slow with technology purchases, due to the last "IT Manager". When I mean slow, I mean 486 slow. Fortunatly, this person is no longer with the company
and I am now in charge of all the IT purchases and network management. I have recenlty purchased 6 Dell 5150's for our much overworked sales staff, and they absolutly love them. Personally, I thougt that they did the required tasks, but for a "gaming/multimedia" computer I think they stink. So, along with my new job duties, I get to spend alot of uninterrupted time on the internt. About a month and a half ago I loged onto Dell and what did I see? A lovely Dell XPS/9100 looking at me.
I knew from that moment on, regardless of what my wife would say, I had to have on of those bad boys. REVIEW
I've only had my 9100 for 4 days now, so I really have not really had to oppertunity to test it to it's "breaking point". However, with the limited time that I have had it, I just have to say Holy S**t, this thing rocks!CPU
I got mine with the 3.0GHz processor with the thought that when faster processor's come out, Ill upgrade if need be. Personally, I dont't see the need to do this anytime soon. Plenty of power to spare. As I'm typing, i'm transfering approximatly 3000 songs from my desktop pc (Dell 8200), playing Pirates of the Carribean on the DVD burner, and "browsing" kazaa at the same time.RAM
Only got 512MB when purchased. Will upgrade as the need arises, and when my wife allows me tospend some more money. No bottlenecks caused by lack of memory yet.DISPLAY
Got the WUXGA and don't regret if for one minute. The picture is absloutly stunning. Not one dead pixel to be seen!
I have used my 9100 in all types of light conditions, and have yet to have difficulty seeing to screen clearly. However, it's going to take some time for me to get used to the smaller font sizes, but I think i'll have no problem adjusting. This widescreen on this thing is amazing. It's very easy to run multiple browser windows at the same time.GRAPHICS CARD
I haven't had a single lock-up of artifact issue yet. I just finished playing Halo for about 45 minutes with every immaginable setting turned up tp the max. Barely a noticable slowdown at all. I'va also played Black Hawk Down, same results. Full settings, no slowdown. Other games that I have tried are:COD, Battlefield 1942, Grand Theft Auto-Vice City, Serious Sam 2, Painkiller Demo, Doom3 Demo, and Flight Simulator 2004 - A Century of Flight.
Every single one of these games look better than I could have ever imagined. I know this sound like I'm gushing, but I wish all of you could see what I can see. Those of you who have the 9100/XPS know exactly what i'm talking about.KEYBOARD/BUILD QUALITY
This is a very well built laptop. The keyboard is and absolute joy to type on. Very good feel and feedback. Solid button feel, have yet to experience any keyboard flex. I'm not to crazy about the pointing do-dad or the touch pad, but i've neaver really liked them anyway. I picked up a Logitech MX510 optical mouse for my point and click duties. I know this is a loptop review, but if anyone needs a good mouse, this is the one for you. Solid tracking, along with good comfort and button placement.COOLING
I'v been typing off and on for the last hour or so; on battery I might add, and the fans have only cranked up once. This lasted for only about 1-2 minutes. Not to bad considering what I am doing at the same time.(Read Above in CPU) I'va had the laptop on my lap the whole time - go figure, a laptop on an actual lap. It's a little warm on the legs, kind of like a electric blanket on low if that makes any sense.OVERALL
I have to say that I am very happy with this purchase - as if you couldn't already tell. I'll keep testing and playing and keep you all informed if anything I think is worthwhile should arise. If anyone has any questions that have not been answered, post them and i'll chime in with my two cents. For now, all I can think about doing is smashing nannas
