Travelmate 2310 Keyboard + Mouse problems

This is most confusing. THe Keybaord and touch pad stopped responding, put in a USB mouse, and that works. It crashes when you try to shut down, and holding down the on/off switch does nothing (the whole keypad has died, but lights still work).

Remove battery, and reboot, F2 works to get into BIOS. Alt F10 does nothing on bootup so i can return to factory defaults.

Press F8 and boots into safe mode, keyboard and mouse work fine. Reboot into normal mode, keyboard and mouse no longer work (mouse works if you moce it as windows starts to load, then it just stops). Have to remove battery to reboot.

Complety removed all partitions and formatted, then tried to restore with my backup disks made long ago, but as soon as windows boots, same problem.

Alt F10 still no longer works on bootup, although it is enabled in the BIOS.

It is an Acer Travelmate 2310, anyone got any ideas?

I have even tried to install a new version of XP, from a standard disk, but half way through install, keyboard stops working.

The fact it works in safe mode tells me it's cant be dodgy wiring, whcich usually means driver problems, but the fact ti does it with restore or new install is very confusing.

Anyone got any ideas, however daft or stupid?

Cheers

26 views and no ideas?

Only kidding lol

After intensive google searching, someone said there is a battery problem, so i tried it.

And believe it or not, with the battery out, running off the mains, it works fine, but put the battery back in, and with mains still plugged in, when you boot up, if in safe mode it works, but in normal mode, the keyboard and mouse do not.

How strange is that. So if anyone else gets a problem, try it with the battery out.

I am now in the process of contacting ACER, see if this is a design fault, or just a duff battery (although with the battery in, you would think it would work ok with power plugged in, maybe not).

Hi,

No your not going mad, I have exactly the same problem. I have an Acer Aspire 3000. Battery in KB & Mouse not working, with battery out it works fine. Use a bootable Linux and the KB/Mouse work fine. I will also attempt to contact Acer regarding this.

It looks like the same problem here travelmate 2312 (LMI_L). User complaints about not working keyboard/mouse, when servicing (battery removed) everything works just fine.

Ive come to the conclusion that it must be a faulty battery. To work around it in XP ive disabled 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Battery Method'. I assume replacing the battery would also fix the problem. You can find more on this around the web by searching for the above terms.

divtech - thanks for your comments, and to disable the Microsoft ACPI thing in Device Manager. I have searched for a couple of days for "fixes" for this, and I had the same gut-feeling, especially having tried sodafountain's approach with re-build, plain-vanilla XP etc.

Three successful reboots in the last few minutes since reading this post - I will post back with any further comments in case it starts happening again. I'm thinking of updating the BIOS, in case its a mismatch between the ACPI features in XP, and the ACPI implementation in the BIOS...

Cheers!!!

Hi everybody. Not sure whether this thread is closed or not i cannot see any indication of that but if it is maybe the mods can redirect it to a more appropriate place.

Anyway, I am have the exact same problem with an Acer travelmate 2310. The keyboard and touchpad will not work unless I remove the battery. I cannot for the life of me think what effect the battery could have on the KB/TP but it most definetly does have an effect.

My actual question, after that ramble, is:- Was this ever resolved? Or does anyone have any info on this problem.

Incidentally I'm a noob on here so hello everyone.

Replacing the battery was the fix
