Dual booting XP/Vista e1705 difficult?

Thread Starter
I have dual booted many machines in my time but from what I read its a pain with Vista already installed from the factory. How true is this? I am trying to avoid a total format and reinstall of Vista if possible. There is a Hitachi HTS721080G9SA00 SATA drive installed as well so will I need SATA drivers during the XP install if using a slipstreamed SP2 XP disc? I also read I will need a floppy drive to install the SATA drivers and no other media will work, which I find hard to believe. I have been searching the forums but am finding mixed results.

Adobe PS has got to run better under XP. This is my wifes machine and Vista is simply not that great IMO. I typically stick to my 8600 but I wanna see what this thing runs like using XP. Thanks for the help!!

I know your against fresh installs....but I'm currently dual booting XP/Vista with no issues on my e1705. When it first arrived...I did try the dual boot keeping the factory Vista install. I just had to use an effective partition program (i.e. Acronis Disk Director, partition magic, ect..) Create the partition and then reboot and install XP on the new partition. To regain Vista capability after XP install I used Vista Boot Pro 3.3 . Which also allows you to use the Vista Boot loader for dual booting. In any case....It goes with ease...

Oh..... I never once needed SATA drivers on a floppy...

But after testing... I preferred wiping the drive completely and starting fresh...It gave me more confidence on the stability of the system...

The way I have done it when Vista is already installed is to install XP as normal (which will lose option to boot from Vista temporarily).

Then install VistaBootpro onto XP. It detects the Vista installation and adds it to the boot menu.

Step Two

Burn it to CD as an ISO image

for vista default burner ISO software can be downloaded here:
32-bit version
64-bit version

Step Three

Boot from the CD drive, put Linux CD in drive and boot. It will run Simply MEPIS from the CD, but it will not install

4
Step Four

Sign in as: root, password: root

5
Step Five

Click on "Run QTParted"- that will open a box showing your partitions. The main Windows partition is usually /dev/hda1

7
Step Seven

In the box labeled FREE SIZE AFTER, type the size (in MB) that you want the new partition to be. That will create free space.

8
Step Eight

Right click on the free space, click on create

9
Step Nine

Select partition type (NTFS or FAT32), click OK

10
Step Ten

Click on file(top left), then commit- changes will take effect

11
Step Eleven

Click close, then click on the K in the lower left of screen and logout, restart computer

12
Step Twelve

remove CD and it will boot to windows, check your partitions.

Install Vista OS to install on 2nd partition OR
(this can be done with XP after Vista installed- http://www.syschat.com/dual-boot-vis...eady-1946.html)
