I'm on my 3rd MOTHERBOARD now!

Order ID 26269 bought from PCTorque 9880-C around beginning of 2005.

No Over clocking, no dropping, fans always have ventilation, kept clean w/ canned air, even have a laptop fan that blows the right direction

First MB went bad 5/2007

Now that MBrd goes bad for no reason I know and this time it’s costing me a ton.

Friends, this means this laptop is not to be bought without expecting the Mother Board to go bad.

Maybe my luck sucks but I took very good care of the machine and did not create the problem.

Never a Sager Again . . .

Well that's certainly your decision.
Personally I was skeptical of the whole premise of the 98* machines.
My 8890 seemed to have as much P4 as a notebook could handle.
But I happily upgraded to a 9750 and I'm upgrading that to a 9261.
I've gotten great value, performance, and reliability from Sager.
But I knew when Clevo was pushing the envelope a little too far...
Maybe it's not for people who can't make that determination.
Or maybe I'm just lucky... And a little too smug.

Probably not.

Most ppl's 9860 failed on them (the 1st time) between year one and year two. The 9880's were also problematic, and to a lesser extent the 9890's. Clevo designs are hit and miss appearenltly, and in my experience the Sager tech's are second rate -- that's a recipie for disaster.

It's incredible to see the shills surface whenever a new product line is released. A quick stroll through the various mobile tech support forums will tell you much. My standard advice WRT Sager products is to wait a while to make sure you're not getting a lemon, or spring for the expensive warranty. The top end models do tend to be top performers, and the prices are comparitively reasonable, but they have to make up the margins somehow...

Personally I'd rather not have to worry about wether my machine is going to spend more time in the shop then not, and there are better brands out there.

I have one of the original 9860s and had no major problems (3 years old) . The only problem I had was with the modem chip interfering with Realtek Sound Chip which many with early 9860s have. I removed the modem myself and no problems with sound on Vista or Linux.

Very interesting replies - thank you. I don't know what ppl stands for though: Private Pilot License, Presbyterian pro-life, Petpet Protection League . . no. Punk Ass pisssed off Lesbian? Forget it. Anyway, heat is the culprit most of the time and cramming all the stuff so tightly is probably the cause...even when there's fans blowing apparently. I guess I'm lucky in that I just drive by Sager to get it fixed but not really. I fugure they knoow the machine the best obviously, but they didn't catch the bad MB the 1st time so I had to drive by again and wait again . . . 1 month total. It reminds me of a big long Cadillac that feels so good to drive but you know it's going to blow up some day cuz it's so full of bells and whistles it just has to. But then again, I think I'm in the minority here - 3 mbrds in 2 years. Who knows?

Did you have any symptoms that led you to thinking the MOBO may be going?

I wish I knew if there was anything to look for. I would like to have sager replace the damn thing before I loose my warranty.

there is no point in looking for anything wrong or wishing for it to die before your warranty expires because all of the pentium boards in the 98xx series are defective and will fail pre-maturely. the older ones simply died out of the blue (like my first one) or they actually fry resistors and capacitors (like my second one, causing smoke to literally rise from underneath the keyboard.) and the new revisions have a bad habbit of destroying the hard drive controller.

if your motherboard works without any issues i would just sit on it. instead of clevo helping the poor folks that purchased their defective product by offering a 75% discount in motherboard replacement they left everyone high and dry and everyone is paying the price for it, including alienware. i am glad to see that alienware dropped clevo from their products listing and did not chose to sell the new d900 models.
