Not worth the upgrade. Runs like crap on my 7950GTX oc'd@630/700

You won't be able to play it at 1440x900 unless you wear a thick pair of goggles and are psychic enough to guess where the gun reticle will be in 4 seconds when your next frame refreshes on the screen.

I tried it at 848x448 resolutions with everything on high, and I still only get about 4-5 FPS.

This is just silly.

It should, depending on the res you use. I can run smoothly at 1360x768 on high and 8xAF. Maybe 30FPS average or so. That's with the 8800 GT, so you might have to set one or two options to medium for the 8800 GTS.

I also plan on having AF and AA turned totally off as those enjoy ripping a hole in my FPS for sure, then I should be able to manage high settings

Well, at high or ultra-high, all we'll get with any 7xxx series is a slideshow for sure. But let's say that I found an acceptable quality/performance ratio at 1280x800 with my GS. I could easily assume that with a 7950GTX I could raise the resolution a bit and even push one or two options further ?

So the GT is more performant than the GTS ? How come the GTS still costs more and has more RAM ? I'm a little confused with the new GT's place on the market...

By far. The GT using 65nm tech is up to par with the GTX when AA and AF are not in use. It's that 256bit vid ram that's holding it back

Wait the 8800GT has 512MB of RAM, not 256MB. And it tears up the 8800GTS 640MB and spits it out.

Yeah... nVidia and their naming scheme. It's got a lot of people confused why a "GT" would be faster than the "GTS". But once the new GTS (and maybe a GTX, or the new 9xxx series) comes out, then the naming scheme will work again. But for now, you can't go wrong with the price/performance of a GT.

Not that it's related to our notebooks....I played the demo last week on one of Fry's Electronics 'demo-for-sale' machines with dual 8800 ultras and core 2 extreme quad processor all settings on ultra.

All I can say is we're a LONG way from having a mobile solution that can even come close to those graphics - no matter what you do.

I started buying components for a new desktop rig that day.

So am I. I'm currently shopping for a 7950GTX upgrade, but deep inside me I know I'd only be satisfied with a gaming desktop. What a world, computer gaming. *sigh*

I don't see much reason to get the 7950GTX over the 7900GTX. 99% of 7900GTX can easily overclock to 7950GTX speeds, and the 7950GTX is constantly going for $80-100 more on eBay. If you want a nice cheap 7900GTX, check eBay item #220170445128. Same seller I bought mine from.

Thanks for the lead. Only problem is I currently have a pending offer on a 7950GTX. On a different matter, do you guys think a desktop E6750 with a 8880GT can run crysis at Ultra-High in 1440x900 ?
