That is why I went with PC MicroWorks. I got a pretty good deal. I figured that I would have to spend around 5K(pre-tax) for my system. Dell and Alienware both charge me tax, so I was looking at around 5500. PC MicroWorks only charges tax to CA residents. That alone saved me $450.

My total system was $4437 and that was with the 3 year diamond warranty. Something I wasn't even looking at from Dell or AW.

Of course I don't have the flashy lights, or an alienhead on the back, but I don't think that is worth $1000.

Hmm, one concern I would have with those SLI 8800s lappies is their use of desktop CPUs. IIRC they do not have the same built in level of clock scaling the mobile parts have, have a larger idle power draw, and need better cooling.

I guess I'll be waiting to see what mobile alternatives arrive. Battery life isn't too much of a concern, but my XPS Gen 2 is at about the weight limit I'd be comfortable lugging around. The frame on it is solid... I'm not sure a larger and heavier laptop would hold up as well to the traveling I do.

Can those desktop cpu based lappies with SLI 8800s even run on battery at all? I'd be concerned due to a lack of clock stepping on the cpu. Maybe things have changed since the days of the P4 3Ghz laptops. Back then I bought a Sager, and while it was fast - it also would blow a stack of documents off the desk and drown out the TV every 45 seconds when the fans cycled :P

If anyone happens to pick one up I'd be interested to hear how loud/heavy/hot those desktop-cpu based lappies get. Thanks!

Well maybe the Sli 8800 card laptop can keep the coffee warm lol.

What ever they have done it supposed to fit into the M1730 series laptop so it should have the thermal issues addressed already.

Did not the M1730 come with a 230 watt brick ??? thats was for the 8700 Sli setup.

What's the advantage going with the barebones roiute?? I can't really find a site that seems to save much $ this way.

beacuse then I don't have to get ripped off by paying another 1.5k for stuff I can get @1/3rd the price off of ebay or discount shops.

Quote from a Clevo reseller "The nVidia 8800M GTX Video Card will be available in the end of Dec., you can pre-order it right now to reserve this fastest notebook GPU. It will be available in single card configuration first, the dual card configuration is still unknown."

It is on average $200+ cheaper, depending on the components you select. Don't buy the components from the barebones site; that's the trick. Buy the components from a distributor for cheaper.

way more cheaper than that bud.

I can get the x6800 for like way cheaper .

btw the 8800gtx needs a MOBO upgrade for thed900c

Thats why I said depending on components. If you go with a 1.6/512mb/60gb/cdrom setup, you wont save much money. If you go 2.4x4/4gb/160gbx3/dvdrw you'll save a bundle.
