Idiotic BIOS Update failure on Arima W730-K8 model Visionary 811A aka. emachines M68*

Hi folks, I guess this one goes directly to qhn, since you're the man to talk to when it comes to the Visionary 811A. To cut a long story short, I flashed back the latest original Targa BIOS on my laptop, not considering that it might not support my Newark 3400+ CPU. I assume it is only intended to run with Clawhammers, 'cos after the "update" I got a laptop that is as dead as a Dodo. It powers on, optical drive is assesed, but then nothing happens. No BIOS screen, no post.
I used to run 0F08P02E from the fizi-site on it (at least that's what i think, it's too late to check now . Did this cos I had standby issues, which were related to ATI tray tools shared memory function, but I figured that out only later. Made the CPU upgrade a few months ago and forgot about BIOS worries) which ran fine for both the Clawhammer and the Newark, and made the Targa flash back with a Flash Iso-CD. Now I'm stuck with a bricked laptop.
Already got info on the web about where to get the BIOS-Chip reflashed, but I still want to hear ur asessment on my stupidity and want u to verify that a.m. BIOS version 0F08.P02E is the correct one for my needs.

Thx in advance and take care....

Since i got a mobile sempron 3000+ lying around from one of my mates' broken laptop i consider putting this one in and giving a shot on booting and reflashing the bios. Good Lord let this help, i need my laptop....

Do you think a mobile sempron 3000+ 25W will run in this machine with the Targa Bios on it? I might give it a shot, since i got one of those at home from a defective HP notebook (belongs to one of my mates)

cheers...

Do you still have the orginal Proc, that came w/ the notebook? if you did, shouldn't that still work? and couldn't you find one thats works on ebay? as well as the orginal BIOS Chip...............why don't you ask him: http://www.darntoothysam.com/servlet/StoreFront if he his something that can help, I'm sure he might be able to help you out here? I've bought form him many times before, this guys is a VERY GOOD Seller, and has a lot of Emachines & Gateway parts for sale!

Actually I've already considered another CPU upgrade for quite some time and wanted to wait for a Newark Athlon 4000+ to turn up on German ebay. I auctioned the old Clawhammer CPU one week after I won the auction for the 3400 Newark (paid only 27 Euros for it), and since the emachines BIOS ran fine with it and the hammer, I figured I could do a flash back to the Targa BIOS, and that's where things got messed up. Well I now might want to wait for the bios chip with 0F08P02E on it, which has already been ordered, or take part in an auction for a 3700 Clawie which will end in to days. If I win it, I 've got two CPUs and the corresponding flashchips with them, so I'll definetly be a major geek :-)

Yeah I heard that OVER FUSLHING the BIOS CHIP can mess things up, and it can take up to 24 to 48 hrs. to clear that BIOS Chip (may be better for you to just get another BIOS CHIP), I don't really by the whole BRICKING the PC Theory as the BIOS CHIP can be replaced, like I said before, why don't you just start-all-over again with a new BIOS CHIP and it's orginal CPU, I bet that if you do that, you will find that your lappy will bootup just fine (unless you somehow hosed your motherboard, if that's the case, then, that's a whole other problem.............

Yeah, the laptop is not really bricked, it should run fine again with the new 0F08P02E Bios chip.... Hmmm, having the machine open again I can see so many fun things to do with this laptop. I might even try a GPU cooling mod. Currently I had it running at 465 /225 MHz. It maxed out at 485/235, but I considered a safety margin since my fans are turned off round 50/50 of the time during gaming. Though it ran 485/235 too without issues, cos my case temperature never exceeded 50 degrees Celcius. Don't know if pushing the limit further will give a mentionable performance boost, but somehow I'm tempted to find out now, hehe...

Quick update here. Received the 0F08P02E Bios chip today, popped it right in and I'm up and running again. Conclusion: Any 90nm Newark CPU needs this BIOS not just the Athlon 64 4000+. However, Clawhammers do also run fine on it. No gpu mod was made, the machine is still good as it is.

cheers....

No, I still got my 3400+. There hasn't been any 4000 on German ebay for the last 4 weeks. The last one I was watching, but not actively bidding for went for 78 Euros...

cheers

Yeah I hear Ya, I got out my old 7405GX and fired-it-up, and NO BOOT, found out, the BIOS CHIP was Fired, (too many BIOS flashes I guees) it was VERY hot to the touch, so, I took it out and orderd another one off ebay, put it in and it works like a charm, there are a lot of screws missing, and I don't know where the hell they go, but, it still works, since I did the 2GB Ram update about 2 yrs ago, this thing is FAST.......and the number of time I've took it apart, it still works and is still a GREAT Numbers Crunchier, but it's showing a lotta wear now, the hinges are cracked (both of them) and the case is kinda worn-out nowI was gonna donate it, or give it away), but found out, it's worth a lot just for the parts.............if any of you wants this for parts, please let me know, maybe we can work something out?
