So i probably did something stupid

Well I've been needing a Dual Core cpu for a while now because of the video editing I do, and the games meah eye candy on everything has been high with my FX-55 i've been very pleased with my FX-55 up until i started using more demanding games (Crysis Demo and Call of Duty 4) and Adobe Premiere CS3. Those 3 items is just KILLING my system and the multitasking is starting to bug me (yes i'm greedy) So today i bought an AMD 4400+ X2 with intentions of over clocking it up to the 2.6Ghz (i hope) from what i saw in a lot of the benchmarks out there the only reason the 4400+ X2 is scoring lower than the FX-55 is because of the CPU clock (i would assume)

My current system specs are in my signature, do you guys think i f--ked up? or what i'm trying to keep my 939 setup alive for 1 more year till i am forced to upgrade cause right now i just dont have the money for it and i needed more performance.

Do you think Vista may be slowing you down?
The second core might help on premiere but gaming I don't think will show much improvement.

im on a dual boot system, i'm typically on XP because of vista's lag issues with the single core cpu.

gaming i dont expect any improvement except for in crysis (with a mild overclock) i mainly did it to keep my 939 setup alive for another year, and for the simple fact the FX-55 falls flat on its face when it comes to multitasking

I don't think it's a "drastic mistake" it's just not maybe the best option.

Either way, I do think you'll see an increase in performance, maybe not VERY dramatic though.

Scratch that CPU, it was backorded, so i went to newegg, found out i can do a C2D E6550, 2GB ram and a mobo for little over $100.00 more, and i figured i could easily sell my FX-55, mobo and ram on ebay to cover most of my uprade expense!

I think that's a good plan. You'll have a much better upgrade path this way

now hopefully i can unleash this 8800GTS
Now sell the GTS and get a 8800 GT =)
I gotta agree, would be a better plan
Keep the 8800gts lol, not worth the hassle to transfer over to the GT considering your problem now is your CPU bottlenecking.
ehh he'd still get extra performance out of the GT. I'd do the trade off if I were him, we're talking a difference between acceptable playing and not acceptable frame rates.

It also depends on how easily he can get rid of the 8800GTS, if he can't get rid of it easily, then I'd say he should keep it as well.

You dont seem to understand, hes only hitting 5k on 3dmkar06, that tells me his CPU is bottlenecking him hard, therefore the GT would not be a benifit as he would only hit 5k on 3d06 on that also.

He's upgrading to the E6550, that's gonna open up a hell of a lot for him.

Yea the current bottleneck i have is a Single core FX-55 chip

and from what i've read the 8800GT wont support DX10.1 (is this true?)
Besides i got an SLi Mobo, i may just go SLI 8800GTS

The 8800GT indeed isn't DX10.1

Also, I'd say your money is definitely better invested in a single 8800GT or SLI GT's

Yea you know your PROBABLY RIGHT!

Now i need to find a buyer for my 8800GTS
post #17 of 21
I seriously say do not get a 8800GT, its a new card, wait it out till the newer cards come out that have more memory and support dx10.1
post #18 of 21
It doesn't matter, before the new ones get released he'll just have better performance, resale value will only decline further for the GTS series before then.
what he will lose in the transition from a gts to a gt is not worth the performance gain if he just waits and changes out to a better more memory card...Its his choice I think penny wise dollar foolish on this one...the GTS is a great card, no need to switch out just yet.
Why would he be taking any loss? I think you could still sell a GTS for over $250, making the trade off a no money loss situation
