noisy fan, freeze, won't start up

Hi,
My Thinkpad R40e (3 years old) is having problem. Hope you guys can help.

Recently it freezed several times (with display of windows desktop, but no response to mouse/keyboard). When I boot it up, occasionally it will freeze (with black screen, only the Power and Battery LED are on) before entering into the windows startup picture.

As I vaguely remember, it has frozen several times before, and may have had the black screen at startup once or twice in these years. The problems were obvious last weekend. These several days it hasn't happened yet.

However, since last weekend, I have noticed the fan is very noisy now. It sounds like a chainsaw. The laptop may run for several hours with less noise. But then it gets louder. The chainsaw will go on for 2 minute, then becomes quiet for maybe 30 seconds, then goes on again. The problem may have been there for a while, but more noticeable since the freeze and black screen in last weekend.

When I startup the system, there is strange noise from the fan, for only 0.5 second. It's like something without enough power. Like the sound of a razor when the battery is low.

Also I don't hear any beep at startup anymore (As I remember, there should be one short beep after you press the power button. Not 100% if I remember correctly.)

Hope you guys can suggest what might be wrong and what to do. Thanks!
