inspiron 1501... white screen w/ vertical lines

Thread Starter
it's running WinXP, AMD dual core, 1 gig ram, 120 gb hd...

seems to happen when i'm in any application. it'll kick me out and i'll have a white screen with blue or purple vertical lines. bought new in June of this year and it's been happening almost daily for the past 3 months.

2 days ago, i finally decided to reinstall windows XP. i did this and i still have the problem and it seems to have gotten worse. just today i got the error 4 times! and the last time i just got a solid blue screen. it's never happened this often before.

i called dell tech support. they seem to think it's bad ram so they're sending me new ram to try out. it's not the BSOD... it just mostly the white w/ stripes screen or, like the last time, a solid blue screen... no text.

i searched the posts and found somewhat similar experiences but not quite the same. anyone have this problem or can offer any advice?

thanks...

I can't see why it would be the RAM... you don't mention that Windows would freeze or anything... unless that's what you meant by "it'll kick me out"???

If Windows doesn't crash and the Dell support link anod posted does nothing for you, I'd say your screen is going bad (its control circuitry) or the video card is going (I hope yours is not integrated).

I got the same problem on two different Inspiron 1501 laptops. Did updating all the drivers solve the problem?

Thanks

This is clearly not a problem with software but with hardware. Updating the drivers will probably not cure it. Follow anon's link and do a BIOS update, that should take care of things. If it doesn't, check for a dirty air intake on the bottom of the laptop or any other way the airflow could be blocked. As a last resort, try to get the laptop repaired or replaced by Dell. But my money is on the BIOS update.

if you think it is "clearly not a problem with software but with hardware" problem why would your money be on a bios flash?

Well, you're kind of splitting hairs here as I'm sure you understood what I meant... but yeah, I always tend to think of the BIOS as part of the hardware as it directly controls it and is the main interface between it and the OS, it's drivers and software. But yes, I should not let people think that the BIOS is a piece of hardware per say... my appologies. My mistake for triyng to help people I don't know too... so I'll let you do it next time.

wasn't trying to be a dick, just wondering what the bios has to do with a hardware problem, i didn't understand. don't get your feelings hurt

Sounds like there is an issue with the graphics card in the system. My D820 will do the same thing on occasion, but that's when I decide to move the mouse or type at the EXACT moment windows wants to turn off my LCD to save power. However, your problem is MUCH worse than mine and does warrant soem attention on Dell's part.
