What do you think of the R40 ThinkPad?

It took me forever to save the money to finally buy a laptop and now that I'm ready I can't decide!!!!!
I'm really not sure which one to get and it's driving me nuts.
I really like the R40 thinkPad. It's seems the most well made out of all the ones I'm considering. I'm not much of a gamer but I do do a lot with digital photography and I'm wondering if the R40 screen is good enough. I also don't want to settle for poor quality video playback as a trade for durability. Is it strictly business oriented?
The other laptops I am considering are Sonys and toshiba so if anyone has anything to say that might help me decide I would really appreciate it.

is portability and battery life very important to you? My friend has the thinkpad t40 and it is an excellent machine he uses it for college but its plays games and does everything else very well. It is also very thin and get about 4.5-5 hours of battery with regular school use.

I did look at the t line. They are lighter, but I'm not going travelling so far that I would need to spend that much more for the Tline. It's very important that the screen be bright clear and crisp.And dvd playback is nearly flawless.

I've been reading through a lot of posts and now I'm actually wondering if maybe the dell 8600 might be right one for me. So many people here seem to have one and like it.
