Is this notebook ODM the Compal CL56?
Yep, it's the Compal CL56 alright. Same machine as the PowerPro M 5:6. I hope Compal would put all these whitebox variants on their site rather than just a generic CL50 series.

Powernotebooks offers paint jobs now?

What I don't understand with Voodoo is that they take the notebook apart and do "improvements" to things they say are substandard with the original manufactures design. By disassembling the notebooks, they void the manufacturer's warranty and now need to charge a premium for the notebook since they have to pay for warranty work out of their own pocket. When I contacted Voodoo and asked for the differences in performance they obtain with their modifications, I get generalities and no concrete support that what they do to these notebooks does in fact improve anything over the factory specs. Also, if they are fixing things that are wrong with the design, shouldn't the warranty reflect these improvements and more importantly, why no availability of damage insurance?

I find this all really strange, I would pay extra for something if I thought I was getting fair value for my dollar, but I have to ben sold on the idea.....so far, no deal for me after talking to reps from Voodoo.

Nope... no paintjobs from power notebooks. SO essentialy you are paying more than 1000 dollars for a paintjob. For some it might be worth it... not for me though.

I don't think Voodoo does any customizations at all. Companies like Voodoo and Alienware started their business by offering high end desktops. That's very plausible and they do in fact offer the best performance, but that's only because desktops are so highly customizable and there are a lot of improvements that can be made by the small guy. Now these companies are seeing profit in the notebook sector and are trying to create a niche market there. But unfortunately they are not capable of doing much in terms of customizing their notebooks. It's just an entirely different scene. So they are left with two things: Voodoo pretends that their notebooks are just as highly customized as their desktops when in fact the notebooks are just painted. Alienware, since they have higher sales volume, asks their ODM to do customizations for them. The point is, notebooks are still far from the clone market and whitebox landscape of desktops, so companies like Voodoo are not justified to market notebooks at such inflated prices.

I just emailed Voodoo and asked for a benchmark comparison between a "stock" Arima notebook and one they have modified. I told them that if they can show me a difference between the two, that I may be swayed into buying one of their products. No way will I pay a premium for a "modified and improved" notebook if there is not an identifiable, rather than a perceived, performance boost.

Time to put up or shut up as the old saying goes!!

They do tend to replace things like keyboards and heat sinks/heat paste with what some people might call better quality ones. But performance wise... never seen it buy much of a nnoticible diffrance.
