My desktop at home in Chicago is a 2002 build of 2 computers –
1 – AMD XP 2400, 2 GB, with an ATI Radeon X850 (Win XP Pro)
2 – AMD XP 2200, 2 GB, with an ATI Radeon 9700 (Win 98 computer for old software)
My laptop – Dell E1705 T2500 with 3GB and 3 hard drivers and a 7800 go. Currently this serves as my main computer for everything! Games, watching movies, internet, GPS driving guidance, CAD, etc. I can be happy playing video games on this for the next 2 years if I stretch it. But actually after work I hardly play games anymore and I mostly watch cable TV or do internet. So a game computer is not a necessity. But I dream of getting one!
I can wait till summer of next year. Then’ll I’ll get the latest quad core from Intel, maybe the new Nvidia 780i boards will be out by then and debugged, and hopefully ddr3 will be affordable or else I’d just get really fast ddr2. I’m also waiting for Vista Service Pack 1 to come out, and I’ve also been waiting for the next gen Nividia 8900(?) to come out. Gee, the 8800 has been on the market for 1 year by now, and I heard that it has a rendering bug so that’s why I’m holding off on it. If ATI comes out with a faster card than I’d go ATI. And for years I used to be an AMD / ATI fan but I’d have to say I’d do Nvidia and Intel now.
It makes me wonder if I should get 2 Radeon 2900XT’s because the 3dmark records are set on these instead of SLI 8800’s. Any reason why?
What I have so far I got on sale –
Antec 900 case for $100
Antec Truepower Trio 650W for $100
Gateway 24” LCD Monitor + 4 year Accident Warranty $880
My current pick for a MB is an evga 680i A1 but I wonder if this board crashes, BSODs, or freezes a lot in games. When I tried a Gigabyte MB in 2002 it would crash or freeze in my games so I hate Gigabyte. Are they good boards now?
I want to get 8GB of memory for Vista 64 bit Ultimate. Is Vista 64 bit hard to get drivers for?
Anyone know when an Nvidia 8900 is coming out?
