M1710 exchange

When I ordered my m1710 I asked them if I could upgrade to a 8800 later on, and if my current 7950gtx was direct X 10. They said yes to both questions. Being false, I rang them two days ago and they have offered to swap it for something else (even though its almost 2 months later). Now I need a gaming computer that will not have any troubles running anything.

So I have the choice of either the new XPS laptop, or a XPS 720 with the 768MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX in it. Both are lower than the price of the M1710 I bought ($3600)

Eventually, will the 8800m in the M1730 be anywhere near as powerful as the desktop version? Or should I just forget about mobility and take the desktop?

not as powerful no, but probably close.

I would get the m1730. but i hate the dual 8700's.

Also, just for a warning, when talking to a Dell Technician, take everything with a heaping ton of salt

Spent 3.6k and didn't do much of research? I wish I can spend that much w/o worries.

Anyways, I think the desktop overpriced even more than the notebooks, so I would go for a M1730.

They tend to know nothing about dx9/10 so its really up to you to find out the definite answer by yourself. (Or by asking one of the cool folks at NBF)

I got a XPS 720, I cant be bothered with fiddling with drivers, under performance or upgrade issues. Not to mention most games from now on will get shitty frame rates. 8800GTX 768MB, here I come.

Very over priced desktop. I don't think it was a good choice.

As long as I can play new games it doesnt really bother me. Id rather 1 terabyte of storage space, a 8800 GTX and a 24 inch monitor over a laptop anyday.

then why did you buy a laptop in the first place?

I kinda have to go with Diefool.

You really should do some homework b4 u drop 3500 on a piece of hardware.

If you say you would take a GTX and 24incher over a laptop, then why not do it?

And mind you, the 1710 is an awesome machine

I expected what I was told first of all, being able to upgrade. I shouldnt have to do research myself, thats what tech support people are for. If they don't know, then they're in a bit of trouble arnt they. And thats also the reason they replaced it. Secondly, I didn't think performance would be so poor and that battery life would be so short. Considering I had the choice of the new laptop or a desktop, you cant say im just settling with the desktop. And lastly im glad I did buy it, because I'll never buy a laptop for games again.

That being said, im glad your all happy with your laptops, but it doesnt mean I have to be. For most new games these days its going to start to struggle, and laptops will never really ever be on par with desktops. Your still waiting for the 8800m, the 9800 will be here not long after that comes (hopefully anyway).

A desktop will always take the lead in performance vs laptops.

Those technicians/sales ppl at Dell dont know a GPU from a CPU.

You should always get a 2nd opinion from someone else when you drop a large amount of $ like that.

You also have to rememeber that some game engines are meant for next gen. Crysis is the one in this case, but all other games you should be fine.
