couple of keyboard keys stopped working and replacing the keyboard doens't help

Hi all:

A month ago my g,h,', and backspace keys stopped working. For the most part that is - if you press down really really hard then they work (maybe it bends something?). Anyhow I figured the keyboard was dead and bought a replacement. But guess what - the same exact keys still don't work (unless you press down really hard). Anybody have a clue (I did read about something like this happening on nc6000's due to some cable that connected a power led - does anybody have more info about this)? My laptop is a compal cl56 (similar to acer 290's).

Thanks alot!

Try this--don't press down real hard, but simply hold these keys down with normal pressure.

It might be the keyboard connector on your motherboard, or possibly the keyboard controller on the board.

thanks for the reply.

When I don't press down hard, rather I press normally and hold it for a couple of seconds, it doesn't work - nothing appears.

In terms of there being a problem with my motherboard, of course it's possible but I just got the board replaced recently.

Any more ideas?

Thanks,
Eli

bump. Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like the connector. Try a USB keyboard? I know this becomes a portability issue though...

what connector?

The connector that allows the in-laptop keyboard's PS/2 cable to connect up to the motherboard.

Either that, or maybe the cable itself? I don't recall from your previous posts whether you replaced the cable along with the keyboard.

The keyboard controller is on the VGA board for this model, and that is probably where the failure is.

The bad news is the VGA board costs about $300.
