Aspire 5315 service manual?

I need to know how to get the memory cover off. Even after removing the four screws it acts like one corner near the indent by the RAM icon is snapped into it or glued down. The cover is huge, over half the bottom of the case.

I'm also interested in upgrading the 1.73 Ghz Celeron M 530 if it's possible. Eventually I plan to upgrade the DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive to a DVD burner, so the manual will be handy for that too.

Hi, I just purchased one of these at the "secret" Wal-Mart sale for $350.

I had trouble getting the memory cover off as well. Bad design.

Remove the 4 screws and gently pry up from the left side. It is held in place with plastic fingers. Pop them up one or two at a time, VERY carefully as the plastic cover is very thin and flexes. Eventually, you will get the whole cover off.

There are 2 X 512MB sticks of DDR2 (PC5300 I believe) so if you want to upgrade the memory you will need 2 X 1 GB.

I got a 2GB set from Newegg for about $50.

I also bought this laptop and want to put a little money into it to enhance its performance considering it was cheap. Was the RAM you got from newegg the Kingston DDR2 (PC25300)? Its like $45. Just want to be sure I guy the right stuff.

Any suggestions aside from RAM to enhance its performance? Should I get rid of any programs it came loaded with? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I purchased this from Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211194

I'm sure that the Kingston stuff will work fine. As far as performance enhancements,
dump Vista! I haven't done that because I don't feel like installing XP. My wife uses the laptop for email and occasional web browsing, so it's fine as is.

I uninstalled the Yahoo! toolbar and the Norton Internet suite. Do yourself a favor, if you dump Norton, just start the uninstall and walk away. Do NOT run any other programs or you will run out of physical memory and it will literally take an hour to remove.

I put the free version of AVG on instead.

You can also disable the Aero Glass interface, sidebar, etc.

I found a post by the OP on another forum talking about the over sensitivity of the touch pad. My wife has complained about this a lot. I disabled tapping and will try the 1.19 BIOS update. This has links to the BIOS update.

Thanks a ton. Sorry to be an idiot, but I also bought a usb mouse because I hate to use the laptop mouse deals. Can I just plug that in and shut off the touchpad? The touchpad is quite touchy.

I still think its a good idea to try the 1.19 bios but have never done something like that. I downloaded the files and the text file says:

[SOP]
1. DOS flash: Please kindly unzip the <CL50119A.zip> under windows mode and do system reboot to boot to pure Dos mode. Then, clcik "IF50.bat" batch file to update bios under pure Dos mode.
2. Windows flash: Please kindly unzip <CL50119A-Winflsh.zip> under windows mode and click "ICL50118.exe" to update bios.

Do I just need to unzip and run one or the other depending upon if I do it within windows or from DOS. Just wasnt sure what it wants me to do.

What is the difference between that memory and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146517 ?

Will either work? which is best?

PC4200 DDR2 is what this laptop takes. You're wasting money if you buy faster RAM.

I used the Windows BIOS flasher for 1.19 and the touchpad is much improved, it rarely quits responding. Before the 1.19 update there were a couple of times I had to reboot to get the pad to work again.

You must have the AC adapter plugged in to run the Windows BIOS update. It won't do the update if it's not.

Turning off tapping plus the BIOS update made a big difference. I wonder why Acer doesn't show that update on their website?

If you want to use Media Player for DVD's there's a hack for that but then you won't have DVD sound. The free fix for that is www.ac3filter.net Then you can uninstall Acer Arcade.

Another great whack of room can be had by uninstalling Acer Game Zone. Unfortunately you have to uninstall each game individually, then delete the stuff in the Start menu manually- followed by the Acer Game Zone folders under Program Files.

After that, get the free CrapCleaner from www.ccleaner.com to clean all the stuff left behind after uninstalling Norton and all that other stuff.

I set mine to all Classic mode so it looks like XP or 2000. MUCH FASTER without the eye candy.

P.S. AVG free.grisoft.com and Spybot Search and Destroy www.spybot.info together are better than Norton and Windows Defender, they're faster and put far less load on the CPU. After installing Spybot, skip the update and immunize during setup. Then go to its icon in the Start menu, rightclick it then click Run as Administrator. You only need to do that once. Then run Spybot and update and immunize.

To stop Windows Defender, click Start > Run then enter msconfig
With that you can stop Defender, Acrobat, Acer Registration and several other things that slow your PC down and use up lots of RAM.

Ok, so being new to the whole RAM purchase thing I went out and got PC25300 DDR2. Will this work with this computer or do I need to return it and buy the PC24200?

Also I notice that some RAM at newegg is 200 pin and some is 240 pin. Does this matter as well. Thanks sooooo much. You guys are a Godsend.

You need 200 pin SODIMM DDR2 memory. The PC 5300 is fine. In fact, that's what it comes with. I just installed mine and there is a noticeable speed increase when running programs.

Ok, thanks....actually I bought the same RAM as you...followed your link from above.

I also found a crazy long discussion on this forum regarding this computer. In the first page of the thread there is a wiki post that has the summary of enhancements and such they have realized. You may find it usefull.

CPU-Z from www.cpuid.com says the RAM in mine is PC4200. Run it on yours and see if it reports the RAM as PC5300.

Is there a memory performance test for Vista that can tell what speed the RAM is actually running?

which tells me what?

I'm assuming that the A-DATA 2GB (2x1GB) 200 pin S)-Dimm DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) notebook memory (mention in link above) will work ok-right/

upgraded from the (2) 512 mb DDR2 PC5300, that was in it new to (2) 1GB PC5300 DDR2, doesn't need to be installed in pairs, could have 1.5gb e.g.
go to crucial.com and run the scanner, it will tell you what you have and what you can handle. I'm using vista the RAM helped. bestbuy $34.99 1gb stick, $70 bucks for 2.

Yep, that's what came inside of mine. 2X512 Samsung PC-5300.

Putting it on ebay.

That is what mine had as well. I bought the A-data 1 gig sticks and put them in and it worked just fine. It appears that some come with different RAM so its wise to either run a scan or pop out what you have so you buy the right stuff.

I got rid of norton but I still have the symantic live update when I look at my program list. I assume this was a component of Norton. Is it ok to remove this? Or are there other programs that came loaded I dont know about that use it?

Yes.

Yeah, remove Live Update too. May as well uninstall all the games in Acer Game Zone because they're all just demo/shareware versions, unless you want to pay for some.

The nasty thing about those games is you have to remove them individually, then manually delete the Start menu entries and the folder under Program Files because there's no single uninstall for Acer Game Zone.

After you get done "de-crapping" your Acer, get the free Crap Cleaner from www.ccleaner.com to remove the leftovers from the Registry.

I removed all the games individually but I am not sure how to remove the start menu entries. Do you mean run msconfig and do it there? Although I think that utility removes start up programs.

Im guessing you mean just right clicking on wherever you see the game zone programs or folder after hitting the start button and selecting delete?

Yes, rightclick on the entry in the Start Menu then hold Shift and click Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin.

Then with Windows Explorer find the Acer Game Zone folder under Program Files and delete that, but hold Shift first then rightclick and click Delete.

Whenever you have to manually delete files, folders or icons like this, run Crap Cleaner to remove Registry entries that point to them.
