Question about Hard Drives

What affect does the HD RPM have on a computer? How does it affect computer performance? Will a faster HD have a noticable affect on gaming? And is it worth the extra money?

Hard drive speeds determine how fast you can access and manipulate data stored on your computer. It affects how fast you can locate stores files and programs, how fast you can load game levels, and how fast you can copy or save to disc.

as with Djembe, i beg to differ r remark:

Huh? It'll improve load times, but during gameplay it'll have no effect. If you're disk limited during gameplay, you're boned. Once everything the game needs is loaded into memory, though, the disk is out of the performance equation.

You haven't played Oblivion have you?

Each cell transition requires a hard disk access so minimising this annoying delay improves the game experience considerably, especially over a 200 to 400 hour gametime.

What about pagefile usage ?

I can't think of many games that will not use a pagefile and as it's on disk......

When in doubt, stay away from 5xxx RPM drives. You wont believe how many of peoples pc I upgraded and make seem faster by the simple act of upgrading them to a 7200+ drive. This is why my file server has plenty of storage.
