iBUYPOWER?

Thread Starter
I've been looking for a moderatly priced laptop that has high performance. I stumbed upon iBUYPOWER earlier and built a laptop for $1050 that anywhere else would have been $1500. Seeing as I've never heard of this retailer before I was hoping someone here would have some opinions or experience with iBUYPOWER. The low price makes me wonder if they are a reliable seller.

Thanks,

Jeff

from my research you will get what you order at the price they have on the website. Though it seems to take a long time for you to actually receive your order and support is definitely sub par.

Also you can only get a 1 year warranty with them so that may also be something to think about

I noticed their website too, and I am considering buying a laptop from there, the only problems I have with them is that they only have 15.4 inch screen laptops, and the graphics cards could be better. I do like the numpad included on the keyboards though, which they've done with some of the notebooks.

By the way, you should check out cyberpowerpc.com. They have some nice notebooks there too.

I would try tiger direct, you can get some nice refurbs there.

ibuypower is ok. i bought my laptop from them 3 years ago and besides an initial problem with LCD (which was fixed under warranty about 6 months in) i really can't complain about the quality of the system (it was a uniwill 258ka0 if anyone cares). In either case... their phone service is actually fairly good. I'd rank it much higher than some larger companies *cough*HP*cough* . On the other hand, emailing them is just about pointless. One factor to consider is yet, on RMA and on initially getting the laptop to you they are SLOW. That is, it took me a month to get my laptop back when the screen was replaced. Of course part of the problem is that they are in CA and i am in IL, and shipping was Ground both ways. (figure 4 to 5 days each way). Some people have reported faster service with as little as 2 weeks downtime. Keep in mind that 1 year warranty is the industry norm and besides asus, to get anything better you need to pay major dollars.

to my knowledge you can't pay for an extended warranty with them

their warranty is basically the OEM warranty. thats as much as you get. for more coverage you need to go to 3rd party warranty provider.

I'd say avoid it. A friend bought one and the support seems to be crap. You'd be better off building.

they really just forward you to OEM..... mostly because they don't have the resources to have an in-house tech support team. thats fairly understandable. that said, what they do is still by a huge margin better than HP/Compaq (which is undoubtedly the worst)... but yeah..they are no DiscountLaptops or PCTorque when it comes to that stuff

EDIT: just for the record. i am not trying to defend the company or anything. hell, i would probably not buy from them again unless the price was downright awesome (as it was for when i bought my system) compared to the competition (at the time, only them, voodoo and mwave had this model in stock...mwave version had a weaker gpu for some reason, and voodoo is well...way more expensive than it needs to be). Basically...long story short. Yes they are cheap, and yes they are legit so you will get your laptop (eventually). However....support, shipping, and repairs is rather slow. Build quality of desktops is questionable (for laptops it doesn't matter since barebones come to them from oem and only thing they do is plug in ram, hdd, and wifi/bt module.
