Is it possible to run Linux right off the disk?

In a word, yes.

In a better word, which disk? You might need to be a bit more specific. Are you referring to running it off a CD? DVD? Floppy? Hard disk? There are distributions designed with all those in mind, so you would have to look for whichever suits your purpose.

Yes, several distributions of Linux are designed to run from CD. One I tend to recommend is eLive. (www.elivecd.org)

actually, it seems most modern distros have the option of running off the CD. Even my beloved Slackware is capable of this. I often recommend running off the CD as a first step to get an idea of what linux is all about.
