Satellite 6100 Bad RTC CMOS error

Hi All,

Hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction. I have a Satellite 6100 and recently it has begun to completely freeze up on me.

I have to hard boot it, then on the reboot I get the message, press f2, I enter the system, reload the defaults and then save.

It is able to boot up, but soon it locks up again.

Any insight would be great how to fix this.

Thanks in advance.

If it is dumping your CMOS settings, I would suspect the CMOS battery may need replacing. How old is the machine? Has the clock been losing time, by any chance?

Have you made any recent software changes that may have precipitated this?

Another possibility is that the system is overheating-make sure your vents are clear. Do you hear your processor fan cut on frequently?

Thanks for the reply.

The machine is just over 1 year old (figures), and the clock has been losing time.

No recent software changes that I can put my finger on that happened before the changes.

I haven't noticed the fans, but will listen for them and will check the vents.

Same problem on my 6100.
It required a new power supply board and a motherboard to fix. Happened to a friends 6100 also.
My 6100 has failed again now, it's the motherboard again.

If you search the web you will find the 6100 is well known as a POS. The have a Cmos battery/board failures and motherboard failures.

6100 RTC battery - Part #? - Where to purchase?

I was wondering if you had any luck finding the RTC battery on the web or at a local retailer? And if so, was it a !#@$% to put in and did it solve the problem?

Thanks for the info

Hey astralstate,

After doing some more research as GWilliams suggested the computer, for me, was not worth, trying to fiddle with. Many many people have had the same problem as I described and it turned out to be a bad motherboard, heat issues, etc.

Some have had the motherboard replaced up to 3 times and ended up having the same problems come up.

This range of Satellite has a connector between the main battery connection PCB and the mobo, it is dual sided and has about 50 pins, this connector breaks the solder joints.

I repair a number of these with this fault.

The reason you loose the RTC settings is that the CMOS battery also connects to the mobo via this PCB.

Richard is mostly correct, except that the connector is 80-pins, 40 to a side. They are very small and come disconnected or break due to a case-flexing design flaw. This issue is widely known and I'm dissapointed with the Bush administration squashing class actions. It is my believe that before last Friday this case would have qualified for class action status. Terrible, terrible deisgn.

RTC Battery and Disk CheckSum. Computer Freezes

Hey Guys,

I am having the same problems with my laptop. And they just randomly started one day. It gives the CMOS and RTC Battery error at startup. Also the other strange thing that is happening is that the computer completely freezes up. And it happens randomly as well. Sometimes after using the computer for 5 minutes...sometimes 10 minutes. I thought it could be related to the heating problem but i'm not sure.

Did y'all laptop also freeze? Did the RTC battery replacement help?

Its been discussed a thousand times before, check some old posts. It will most likely be the connector on the motherboard.

Its propbably not the design, its more the solder quality which is of poor grade. I heard Toshiba found out recently the solder used had an expected life of 18 months, which is pathetic really.

The DC Jack soldering on the A70 is worse by the way.

Most likely replacement the RTC battery will not fix the problem. BTW, Toshiba Tecra TE2100 has the same problem. You can try to fix the problem by reseating the power board, sometimes it helps. In most cases we replace the system board and the power board, because it's hard to say witch connector is causing the problem.
